Growing up my family had a pennant class 18 foot open sloop with a deep 400 lb keel designed for sailing Long Island Sound. Even if the wind could push you over you wouldn't stay over. Sailed on Lake Mendota in Madison, WI. It's about 5 miles by 6 miles.
In high school in the 60's my friend and I were anchored maybe 25 yards off a beach on the other side of the lake. Lying on the beach I thought the boat looked as though it were drifting but figured it was an illusion of the wind and waves. No! We hit the water and swam like mad. Luckily the wind wasn't up and we clambered on board. The anchor rode had broken. Hastily got the sails up and headed back to our mooring. A couple days later I took my brother out with his scuba gear but we never found the anchor.
