'Giant atoms' enable quantum processing and communication in one

MIT researchers have introduced a quantum computing architecture that can perform low-error quantum computations while also rapidly sharing quantum information between processors. The work represents a key advance toward a complete quantum computing platform.

Previous to this discovery, small-scale quantum processors have successfully performed tasks at a rate exponentially faster than that of classical computers. However, it has been difficult to controllably communicate quantum information between distant parts of a processor. In classical computers, wired interconnects are used to route information back and forth throughout a processor during the course of a computation. In a quantum computer, however, the information itself is quantum mechanical and fragile, requiring fundamentally new strategies to simultaneously process and communicate quantum information on a chip.

"One of the main challenges in scaling quantum computers is to enable quantum bits to interact with each other when they are not co-located," says William Oliver, an associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science, MIT Lincoln Laboratory fellow, and associate director of the Research Laboratory for Electronics. "For example, nearest-neighbor qubits can easily interact, but how do I make 'quantum interconnects' that connect qubits at distant locations?"

The answer lies in going beyond conventional light-matter interactions.

Want to help fight Covid-19? Your phone can support research while you sleep | TechRadar

A friend reports a desperate situation: Attempting a book to explain $THING

My suggestions, organisationally:

* Index cards. Lots and lots of index cards. Nothing else approaches their utility.
* Rough out an outline. You'll change it, but it's a structure, even if one you abandon.
* Think in terms, perhaps, of book-as-tool. "What problem does this solve?" Which very likely is "what questions does this answer?" Starting from very basic questions and seeing where they lead has served me.
* Chesterton's fence: why has such an obviously unfit system come to be?
* Be prepared to discard, or at least set aside temporarily, presuppositions and beliefs. Shoshin, beginners' mind, is a challenging state, but useful. "Suspension of disbelief" I ... believe ... comes from Coleridge.
* When considering sources, whether you think you agree or disagree with them, consider their possible conscious and unconscious motives and biases.
* Also: their strongest (potentially most useful, or troublesome), and weakest points. As well as the crux of their argument(s), often a critical weak point, and, when so, frequently obscured or implied.
* History is invaluable. It may not have all the answers, but it has many of the questions and arguments. As well as the obvious situations and dramatis personae. Beware historians.

MDMA researcher is fixing the bad science that sent him to prison | The Verge

Like other drugs, the legal history of the chemical 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, better known as MDMA, is driven more by fear and politics than science. Developed as a blood-clotting agent in 1912, MDMA gained popularity in the 1970s and ‘80s as a party drug and as a psychotherapy tool used in conjunction with traditional treatments. Though the drug was not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, some therapists incorporated it into their treatment regimens for patients struggling with PTSD, depression, phobias, and relationship problems. They credited MDMA with inducing empathy, hailing the drug as “penicillin for the soul.”
If it induces empathy, why would politicians and lawmakers want it legalised?

This is a longish read that shows some of the problems with inadequate drugs trials, misinterpreted results, and just plain wrong-headedness. For example:
Using data Lisdahl’s lab had already collected on people with a history of ecstasy use, he found that users showed more depressive symptoms compared to control groups and that users with a specific variant of the S100B gene, which is associated with psychiatric conditions, showed even greater levels of depressive symptoms than users without the variant. To Medina-Kirchner, these results supported the common belief that ecstasy can impair users by causing severe depressive mood disruptions.
Isn't it just as likely that people who use MDMA are people who had a history of depressive symptoms?

Google has suspended controversial ‘field research’ that allegedly scanned homeless people - The Verge

Less than two weeks ahead of the Pixel 4 flagship smartphone’s debut, Google is reportedly pulling the plug on a controversial “field research” program that offered subjects in US cities a $5 gift certificate in exchange for a scan of their face — after a New York Daily News report that one Google contracting agency was actively targeting homeless people in Atlanta and tricking unwitting college students into participating.

Trump administration imposes new restrictions on fetal tissue research, including ending HIV-research contract and some NIH funding

"The Trump administration on Wednesday canceled a multimillion-dollar contract with a California research lab that uses fetal tissue to test new HIV treatments in a significant tightening of federal support for biomedical science that relies on material collected from elective abortions."

"In disclosing the decision Wednesday, officials also announced discontinuation of funding of all research inside the National Institutes of Health that uses fetal tissue."

Nothing stay the same: not even 'living fossils' like crocodiles.
In a recent study published in Paleobiology, a pair of paleontologists at the Sorbonne University in Paris examined bone from a 237-million-year-old reptile and found signs that the ancestors of the crocodile family had remarkably active metabolisms — and that the creatures evolved them far earlier than expected.
[...]
Crocodiles are [...] members of the wider archosaur lineage, a group that includes endothermic pterosaurs, dinosaurs and birds. The clues to that relationship are written in their anatomy, said Roger Seymour, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Adelaide in Australia. Crocodilians can adopt a more straight-limbed posture than other reptiles, have gizzards, a four-chambered heart and birdlike respiratory systems.

Many researchers took these features to mean that the (thoroughly ectothermic) modern crocodiles are a relic of the transition from older coldblooded reptiles to endothermic dinosaurs and birds, a point of view that strengthened as paleontologists began accepting the idea of warmblooded dinosaurs.

But others argued that crocodiles might have been closer to endothermy than suspected. The crocodilian heart was a vital clue. Researchers like Christina Bennett-Stamper, a research microscopist at the federal Environmental Protection Agency, have described a process by which alligator embryos develop a unique opening just before hatching that allows blood to bypass the lung. The process turns “an endothermic heart into an ectothermic one,” Dr. Seymour said."

1/ New Research from us [4]@BitwiseInvest. As part of 226 slides presented to the SEC on our ETF filing, we did a first-of-its-kind analysis of order book data from all 81 exchanges reporting >$1M in BTC volume on CMC. TLDR: 95% of reported volume is fake but LOTS of good news![5]pic.twitter.com/TuXLlDCRyP

2/ First, key takeaways: A. 95% of reported BTC spot volume is fake B. Likely motive is listing fees (can be $1-3M) C. Real daily spot volume is ~$270M D. 10 exchanges make up almost all real trading E. Most of the 10 are regulated F. Spreads are <0.10%. Arb is super efficient

6/ How can you tell whatʼs real vs fake? Here are two data driven tests (more available in the presentation). The first test: real exchanges have more trades of small amounts than of large amounts (with spikes on round numbers like 1.0 BTC, a behavioral preference).[39]pic.twitter.com/QESVtwU01c
