Bethesda Fountain # 2 (Central Park)

One more look - from a longer/wider perspective - at Bethesda Fountain in its entirety, with people sitting, selfie-ing, etc. As you can see, as of mid-October, the trees are just getting tinged with yellow, later each year in fully changing colors (peaking) so it seems.

This is the view, atop Bethesda Terrace, or on the fountain level, walking down the stairs which are atop a very elegant arcade, where performers are often found (and wedding photographers). The stairs themselves are fascinating, with carvings depicting the "early birds" of the park on the eastern (sunrise) side of the stairs, while the western side features daytime and evening creatures.

Off to the right the Boathouse (restaurant) and rowboat rentals. Behind the trees, to the left here, is the larger expanse of pond and Bow Bridge. Nearby also, Imagine (the mosaic), the Bandshell, and Strawberry Fields.

You can see more images of autumn (in full fury) and Bow Bridge at

Central Park Boathouse - Revisited October 2019

This is more of a little gazebo (the big "clubhouse" is where one rents the rowboats). I took a photo of a couple and their rowboat, stopped at this exact spot, many years ago. That became a book cover! I re-visited this favorite spot a few years ago in the height of autumn and you what that looks like here .. with a link to the original photo as well, and to many more photos of Central Park.

Imagine

A lovely time, early autumn in Central Park. Especially with a bit of "Indian Summer"

It seems the leaves turn colors a little later each year lately, maybe peaking in another 2 weeks, end of October -ish.
Many tourists here still, as you can see, always queuing up to grab quick photos posing with the mosaic.
Watch out for the selfie sticks when it's crowded!

Something for Caturday

Making amends for never having posted to any #caturday tags or collections - since the invention of things like social media.

So here's a "two-fur".

One is an image of two cats in Galicia, near Pontedeume.
The second is "Classic Broadway" (I took a series for a "record cover"), which is on a web page I made in the mid 00's.

Happy Caturday! Hope it's approximately purr-fect.

Simone Leigh

From the Biennial Exhibit at the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York)

"A trained ceramist who has long engaged with radical Black feminist thought, Leigh has fashioned a multivalent response to outmoded notions of the female body as a vessel. Using sensuously textured materials—here, ceramic and bronze—she examines ways in which objects embody and communicate specific cultural traditions and histories through both material and form."

Blowin' Smoke (in B Flat)

And, in color.

This is the "companion shot" of an image I took and posted about a week ago - in monochrome. That one is my own pick, compositionally, as there is more of the store window, with guitars, and sign ("Chelsea Guitars").

Well, I printed that one and this one and asked people (from friends to total strangers) which they preferred and why. Most picked the b&w but several people were intrigued by this one. Why? The smoke, and/or the mannequin detail. OK, "different strokes..."

Masters of American Art

The Biennial exhibit at the Whitney Museum of American Art in NY is winding down its summer 2019 run. Here is a little sample of the treasures on display, three of the artists most renowned in America's short history as a nation: Andrew Wyeth, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Edward Hopper. Others are here on display too, like Andy Warhol and several contemporary artists using all types of media.

Here is an introduction from the museum, on the wall of this particular gallery full of gems, beginning with Wyeth:

"In 1942 Andrew Wyeth found a dead crow near his home in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and brought it to his studio to sketch. He later painted the bird as if it were still lying in a winter field, and evocative choice given the mounting casualties in the war then convulsing Europe....

This gallery presents works that complicate our understanding of the natural world and how artists employ nature to explore human emotions, myths, fantasies, and politics....

Georgia O'Keeffe, whose work is the focus of this gallery, looked to nature and its infinite details to enumerate the complexities of the self and the precariousness of both bodies and landscapes."

More to come, here, there, & everywhere. As I can't make an album "here" (titles, descriptions, etc.), I should say that the three here are - (displaying largest to me, but maybe it varies) : Edward Hopper's Railroad Sunset (1929); Winter Fields (1942, with the dead crow, as described above) by Andrew Wyeth, and one from the series by Georgia O'Keeffe, Flower Abstraction (1924)

At the Hotel Chelsea

I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel
You were famous, your heart was a legend
You told me again you preferred handsome men
But for me you would make an exception
And clenching your fist for the ones like us
Who are oppressed by the figures of beauty
You fixed yourself, you said, "Well never mind,
We are ugly but we have the music"

Medium and Message (Times Square, NYC)

Is this really a thing, FB? ("Anti-hemp censorship policy?")

I absolutely see the same trolling-up of U.S. politics as in 2016, for sure. But zero about hemp politics amid the buzz.
I'd rather see billboards focused on the real crisis - the struggle for the soul of what's left of America! No, strike that...
TImes Square displays seem much more pleasant with animated M&M's and Kinky Boots posters. Real fantasy. Not fake reality.

Anyhow... One glimpse of Times Square. It can be overwhelming, &/or energizing.

Joni Mitchell - Tributes at 75

This is Joni Mitchell's Ibanez arch top guitar, George Benson Signature Model - used in 1979 live album Shadows and Light and also on the Refuge World Tour (1983).

Reminded of her recent 75th birthday tributes, as tonight U.S. Public Television is (re)broadcasting a tribute to towering figure of 60's/70's music, her angelic voice coupled with poetic and compositional brilliance. So nice to see her still with us and appearing in a better state than has been seen/reported recently.

The exhibit had drawn some scrutiny about the relatively limited space afforded to the women pioneers of rock. There is some representation here, and certainly Joni Mitchell is one who deserves acclaim. Joan Jet's guitar is here too, Lady Gaga's piano, a few other icons (but not Joplin, or many others who deserve historical recognition). Still, for one traveling exhibit, borrowing from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's collection, and personal collections and estates of the rock legends, well... the exhibit is massive, and rocks!

Photo is mine. ( #playitloud exhibit at the #metmuseum #NYC #Summer2019)

Under a Starry New York Night
(NYC Blackout, July 13, 2019)

Courtesy of power failure/blackout and a cloudless night.
One more here, from my post-event quest to identify some of what I saw on this rare night of seeing night-sky in NYC.

Just as I have more or less settled on believing -from several skywatch reports and charts that I could see without owning an app - I was looking at an unusually bright Saturn and Jupiter, in addition to near-full moon. While 90% of my shots - hand-held, no tripod, near or total darkness - were blurry or too dark, happily 10% (of a bunch) turned out, well, at least "interesting". Including this.

Turns out there may be much more here than moon, Jupiter, Saturn (though I still can't solidly show the two planets in proper position relative to me, moon, and each other). For example, there are surely some distant stars here, but also one red dot which did not move at all, so not an airplane. (The 2nd dot here I don't see in other images, so maybe that's a plane - or not.)

So here's my take-away shot, the clearest I have of the sky and foreground too (I must have used some flat surface like a news stand as a monopod). All sorts of things. Not the best shot here of Saturn (I have a better one, crisp and clear, but still small, as I was using a high-speed wide-angle lens for the street shots). And the moon is hidden here (but popping through in 3D!) from its path and mine (moon constantly changed, while Saturn stuck close by). But.... "Context and perspective"

I'm standing here directly in front of Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, on 13th July (night of the blackout), at 9:56PM (21:56) EST/New York, under Northern sky, facing SouthEast.

Any astronomy buffs who can get a chart of what we're seeing here??

OhTaxi?!

The scene outside a subway station in New York's Upper West Side, during this past Saturday's power failure, which impacted many plans - cancelled shows, loss of A/C, elevators, and lack of traffic lights and street lights for starters. Add sirens and full moon, stir. Spooky.

The title is derivative of one I used with a favorite image from Stockholm. It was the title on a collection page of Google +.
Just seemed to fit the scene somehow. So that image is below, and this is the link to the web page and some other favorite images.

Central Park Pond

As fate had it, I just stumbled upon this favorite image which I've never posted before - from 2008 - and on this laptop computer which wasn't even born then. Eh. One of those virtual things. (Truly I don't know how this image traveled, but still... first time posting.)

Now, some "here" may have heard me gripe about how this view from the rocks is/was one of my favorite views anywhere, my beloved Central Park looking over the pond at "the wall" of mid-town Manhattan, and sky.

But no more. Now there are some ghastly ugly rectangular money machines sticking up and destroying the symmetry and sky.

So I guess the moral is that it's sometimes wise to "take a picture" while it lasts.

The Vessel

"So I was trying to classify this (for the few places using tags effectively) ..." This is THE new tourist/local attraction in #NYC at the moment.
It is art. It is free. It is hyped. You can climb 1000s of stairs in many directions. As has been pointed out - by @[email protected] - and I agree, it was a huge expenditure with limited apparent impact. Well, I see lines and it is literally "crowded on the High Line" for much of it. Still...

The Vessel is in this new section called "The Spur", where this multi-level thing with crowds and ticket-tackers compete with a circus tent where CNN is giving away promotional things (popcorn on Sunday) I agree with the reviews suggesting a bit of opulence. But there are some photo ops.

Insert Here: Sure wish I could edit. (sigh) But imagine, bcs I'll find this and add it as a comment bcs I'm not imagining it - I took a photo of a wonderful sign separating out the Hudson Yards/Spur from the main HighLine. (Hint: Follow one for the money, one for the show...) Highline still has quiet spots but is also now very popular. Not bad, and in many ways good for everyone, visitors to New York and locals out for a respite.

Spur of the Moment

Now begins the first summer season for the newest (and last) section of preserved rail tracks-turned-greenery: The HighLine. The HighLine has been around since 2014, and before that it was a crumbling elevated rail line last used around 1980. Serving "the meat packing district".

Over the past 5 years HighLine has become an ever-bigger draw for both New Yorkers and tourists, with new restaurants and luxury condos lining the route, mingling with what's left of the old rail yard and meat packing neighborhood. For the residents, maybe better than trains.

What's new for 2019 is this promenade, "The Spur", which is surrounded by a new-gen #skyscape, all mirrored and soaring. And a centerpiece of the #Spur is .... The Vessel. That's what has been getting the buzz and - I can testify - tourists.

To New Yorkers and urban dwellers it looks at first like a parking garage, levels with people, and then you see, like the buildings, it's all mirrors, and art, and people interacting and, well, doing a lot of climbing!

This is just a coming attraction, from my phone actually - with my field day to "do street" and see The Vessel glommed together. I have some hi-res images of various views of that thing, reflections and angles and stairway climbers.

In my camera/card still awaiting space on the 'puter are more images (color & b/w) - both the Spur buildings and the Vessel, which is like a mirrored onion with levels of people looking down at the crowds of selfie sticks.

Ah, summer in the city. [op cit. http://bit.ly/CitySizzle2 ] <<<<<- SOUND TRACK

In the Shadow of Liberty

Or perhaps, in the wake.....

Again, last time for this year, and more urgent than ever, it is crucial to remember the origins of this great (always-before non-political) Holiday celebration. About Independence from an autocratic ruler, and the quest for a land with "liberty and justice for all", built entirely on the contributions of immigrants*.

[*Native Americans not so much beneficiaries, to put it mildly.]

Anyway, a reminder once again, and the song which really should be/could be our national anthem, reflecting the real history - aspirations and challenges, great and not-great events along the way. Sorry if you've heard this/seen this, maybe many times. I can never tire of this, either the music or the words [Lyrics below].

What are we celebrating? Hint, it's not fireworks - but their symbolism of "the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air" (the other national anthem we all learn, and rightfully ...)

CELEBRATE AMERICA TODAY... With eyes open, and understanding the risk we face now to our values, sense of decency, and national purpose. "Cause there's a Monster on the Loose". ("It is us." - Pogo)

~

SOUND TRACK: THE MONSTER (Lyrics Below)

THE MONSTER - Steppenwolf

Once the religious, the hunted and weary
Chasing the promise of freedom and hope
Came to this country to build a new vision
Far from the reaches of Kingdom and pope
Like good Christians some would burn the witches
Later some got slaves to gather riches
But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands, to court the wild
But she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light

And once the ties with the crown had been broken
Westward in saddle and wagon it went
And till the railroad linked ocean to ocean
Many the lives which had come to an end
While we bullied, stole and bought a homeland
We began the slaughter of the red man
But still from near and far to seek America

They came by thousands to court the wild
But she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light
The Blue and Grey they stomped it
They kicked it just like a dog
And when the war was over
They stuffed it just like a hog
And though the past has its share of injustice
Kind was the spirit in many a way
But its protectors and friends have been sleeping
Now it's a monster and will not obey

The spirit was freedom and justice
And its keepers seemed generous and kind
Its leaders were supposed to serve the country
But now they won't pay it no mind
Cause the people grew fat and got lazy
Now their vote is a meaningless joke
They babble about law and order
But it's all just an echo of what they've been told
Yeah, there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into the noose
And it just sits there watchin'

The cities have turned into jungles
And corruption is stranglin' the land
The police force is watching the people
And the people just can't understand
We don't know how to mind our own business
'Cause the whole world's got to be just like us
Now we are fighting a war over there
No matter who's the winner we can't pay the cost
'Cause there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into the noose
And it just sits there watchin'

America, where are you now
Don't you care about your sons and daughters
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster
America, where are you now
Don't you care about your sons and daughters
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster

"Liberty and Justice for All" - Independence Day (4th of July) 2019

Here is the once-proud symbol of America's values and aspirations, as a beacon of hope and opportunity.

On the pedestal, engraved to outlast the attacks on our fundamental beliefs about the goodness and value of people:

“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” - Emma Lazarus
And now... 243 years later, we have.... THE MONSTER.
This is an anthem which might well replace others - it is a factual history, not all peaceful and altruistic, but reality. And today, now, it is imperative to remember the original vision of America, with its ideals and values and compassion towards "We the People".

PLEASE WATCH THIS MUSIC VIDEO - It is great rock, great history, and poetry... And the message is crucial: "America, where are you now? Don't you care about your sons and daughters?" Watch & listen closely. Sing along. Celebrate the promise of America.

Bridges of Manhattan's East Side - View From # 1 WTC

A unique view, one Christmas day, from the rooftop of Tower 1, World Trade Center - as high as possible a view then, from the base of the WTC master antenna. Bridges? Yes: Manhattan, Brooklyn, 59th Street... Looking here at Manhattan, Queens, Bronx & beyond.

Saturday in the Park

This is actually from many summers ago, a favorite image - which, FWIW, wound up as a book cover. Preserved on KM/Kodachrome. Anyway, it's looking like summer again today, as we head into Independence Day week/weekend in the U.S. (Happy Canada Day, too.)

And this is the perfect excuse to re-post this sound-track to summer's beginning, as I've done each of 8 years on Google+.
A favorite song, and perfect sound-track: Saturday in the Park "You'd think it was the 4th of July"... Soon!

More images of NY & Central Park "here" (album) and much, much more on my own site, beginning with this image @

Street Art

These are both "direct from the streets of New York", literally.
Honschar has been a fixture of chalk art in Manhattan, sharing slogans of love and peace for years.
Here's a little sample including one recent image of Honschar himself, hard at work.

Chelsea Hotel # 2609 (Color)

"I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel
You were famous, your heart was a legend
You told me again you preferred handsome men
But for me you would make an exception".....

That was an iconic song ("Chelsea Hotel"), describing Cohen's informal dalliances with 60's music legends in a callous way.
But years later, and in his death, Leonard Cohen is perhaps best remembered for this purely spiritual song he spent years writing:

Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen

"I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah..."

Sesame Street, Little Bird, Wooden Ducks, and Wet Lincoln Center

Is there a #signsunday still? Somewhere there must be. Here's a #sign, New York's new "Sesame Street".
It's live on Broadway, but only a little bird was on hand today, in the rain. Big bird must be around the corner on his own street.

Here is a bridge... would you like to buy it?

Brooklyn Bridge

There are many stories about this bridge! It began as a for-profit (speculative) venture in the boom days of building up Manhattan.

Over the decades there have been countless stories and jokes about charlatans/con men trying to sell the bridge for a terrific price. Wonderful deal! Times change, people maybe not so much. Bridges can be a beautiful thing. To walk on or view. Driving, YMMV

Rescued/re-located from Google+ Collection, RIP April 2019

The Langham (and Dakota)

Here is the Langham, of which I never knew the name despite living/working nearby for decades.
Apparently it is owned by @Brian Millan - :)) - or at least he is a fan, who mentioned the name.

As you walk on or near 72nd St, with the renowned Dakota and Majestic, and opposite Central Park's Strawberry Fields, if you turn left rather than go into the park, one block north is a fairly nondescript white-front building, though with some nice roof embellishment and a distinctive copper-finished entranceway. Well, like finding a new bird, I've learned a new building name. Cheers, Brian!

And a few blocks further North is the American Museum of Natural History, now with an exhibit on T-Rex, illustrating the latest conception of how s/he actually looked, skin/fur wise, and with a "neat" VR experience of hangin' with T... Coming next.

A few whimsical shots from a store window on Park Avenue -
featuring cutlery, reflections, and a very different menagerie.

Coming next, another shift in perspective: buildings and dinosaurs.
