"People are crazy and times are strange
I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range
I used to care, but things have changed" - Bob Dylan

This was the opening song last night at the intimate and acoustically heavenly Beacon Theater, NYC

Dylan, contrary to the belief of some, has in fact aged well.

A-mazing on vocals, keyboards, guitar too, and most of all, harmonica.

I am still processing that show, and swimming in the string parts of "Simple Twist of Fate", and now really listening to the songs on last night's the set list. Beginning with....

Things Have Changed

Dylan is one artist I was aware of and appreciative, but not a huge follower, distracted by other things, from Beatles to Kinks, Who, Doors, Joplin, Jimi, Rolling Stones, Van the Man, Joni, Traffic, Tull... and festivals and tours and recording studios. Now a bit of Dylan.

Bob Dylan was a legend I saw once only, at the Academy of Music. The band was The Band. :)) The performances led to the album "Stage Fright", Dylan & the Band. It was The Band headlining, not Dylan. I'd seen the other shows, great but there was no expectation of Dylan. But at the end of the last show, out walked this guy in denim as the music swelled into "Once upon a time you felt so fine...." and I thought the balcony would fall down, it was so bouncing, things flying... A Beatle-mania moment. Once in a lifetime. Twice now for me. And again, the mysterious Mr. D. actually seemed to be feeling & enjoying the performance, and the ambience. Tres Cool.

You Can Call Me Al - Paul Simon

LYRICS :
A man walks down the street
He says, “Why am I soft in the middle, now?
Why am I soft in the middle?
The rest of my life is so hard
I need a photo-opportunity
I want a shot at redemption
Don’t want to end up a cartoon
In a cartoon graveyard”
Bonedigger, Bonedigger
Dogs in the moonlight
Far away in my well-lit door
Mr. Beerbelly, Beerbelly
Get these mutts away from me
You know, I don’t find this stuff amusing anymore
If you’ll be my bodyguard
I can be your long lost pal
I can call you Betty
And Betty, when you call me, you can call me Al
A man walks down the street
He says, “Why am I short of attention?
Got a short little span of attention
And, whoa, my nights are so long
Where’s my wife and family?
What if I die here?
Who’ll be my role model
Now that my role model is gone, gone?”
He ducked back down the alley
With some roly-poly little bat-faced girl
All along, along
There were incidents and accidents
There were hints and allegations
If you’ll be my bodyguard
I can be your long lost pal
I can call you Betty
And Betty, when you call me, you can call me Al
Call me Al
A man walks down the street
It’s a street in a strange world
Maybe it’s the third world
Maybe it’s his first time around
Doesn’t speak the language
He holds no currency
He is a foreign man
He is surrounded by the sound, the sound
Cattle in the marketplace
Scatterings and orphanages
He looks around, around
He sees angels in the architecture
Spinning in infinity
He says, “Amen and Hallelujah!”
If you’ll be my bodyguard
I can be your long lost pal
I can call you Betty
And Betty, when you call me, you can call me Al
Call me
Na na na na, na na na na
Na na na na, na na na-na na-na
Na na na na, na-na na-na na na
Na na na na, na na na na
If you’ll be my bodyguard
I can call you Betty
If you’ll be my bodyguard
I can call you Betty
If you’ll be my bodyguard
  • Happy Sunday!

Talking about some great bands that sort of got lost in the mix of history. With some great songs, too.
Here's a great example. Not only the song I was looking for, but an album section, so pure and such a great sample. Enjoy.

MOODY BLUES: "In The Beginning"- "Lovely To See You"- "Dear Diary"- w/Lyrics

In the Beginning

I think, I think I am, therefore I am, I think.
[Establishment:] Of course you are my bright little star,
I've miles
And miles
Of files
Pretty files of your forefather's fruit
And now to suit our
Great computer,
You're magnetic ink.

[Inner Man:] I'm more than that, I know I am, at least, I think I must be.

It riles them to believe that you perceive the web they weave.
And keep on thinking free...

Lovely to See You
Lovely to see you again my friend
Walk along with me to the next bend.....

...

Dear Diary,

It's over, will tomorrow be the same?
I know that they're really not to blame
If they weren't so blind then surely they'd see
There's a much better way for them to be
Inside me, yours truly, dear Diary

"Remember, remember, the fifth of November" - John Lennon

Remember (Remastered 2010) | John Lennon

FULL LYRICS BELOW:

Remember (John Lennon)

Remember when you were young
How the hero was never hung
Always got away

Remember how the man
Used to leave you empty handed
Always, always let you down
If you ever change your mind
About leaving it all behind
Remember, remember today

Don't feel sorry
'Bout the way it's gone
Don't you worry
'Bout what you've done

Just remember
When you were small
How people seemed so tall
Always had their way
Do you remember your ma and pa
Just wishing for movie stardom
Always, always playing a part
If you ever feel sad
And the whole world is driving you mad
Remember, remember today

Don't feel sorry
'Bout the way it's gone
Don't you worry
'Bout what you've done

No No remember, remember
The fifth of November

Ab-so-lutely. Just listened to this again. A very ripe time for him.

Here goes. The heart of Van Morrison, for me at least at the time, and his fans... The title track of his 1972 LP album.

St. Dominic's Preview - Van Morrison

LYRICS:
Shammy cleaning all the windows
Singing songs about Edith Piaf's soul
And I hear blue strains of no regredior
Across the street from Cathedral Notre Dame
Meanwhile back in San Francisco
We're trying hard to make this whole thing blend
As we sit upon this jagged
Storey block, with you my friend
And it's a long way to Buffalo
It's a long way to Belfast city too
And I'm hoping the choice won't blow the hoist
'Cause this town, they bit off more than they can chew.
As we gaze out on, as we gaze out on
As we gaze out on, as we gaze out on
Saint Dominic's Preview
Saint Dominic's Preview
Saint Dominic's Preview
All the orange boxes are scattered
Against the Safeway Supermarket in the rain
And everybody feels so determined
Not to feel anyone else's pain
No one's making no commitments
To anybody but themselves
Talkin' behind closed doorways
Tryin' to get outside, get outside of empty shells
And for every cross cuttin' country corner, country corner
For every Hank Williams railroad train that cried
And all the chains, badges, flags and emblems
And every strain on brain and every eye
As we gaze out on, as we gaze out on
As we gaze out on, as we gaze out on
Saint Dominic's Preview
Saint Dominic's Preview
Saint Dominic's Preview
And the restaurant tables are completely covered
The record company has paid out for the wine
You got everything in the world you ever wanted
Right about now your face should wear a smile
That's the way it all should happen
When you're in, when you're in the state you're in
You've got your pen and notebook ready
I think it's about time, time for us to begin
And meanwhile we're over in a 52nd Street apartment
Socializing with the wino few
Just to be hip and get wet with the jet set
But they're flying too high to see my point of view
As we gaze out on, as we gaze out on
As we gaze out on, as we gaze out on
Saint Dominic's Preview
Saint Dominic's Preview
Saint Dominic's Preview
See them freedom marching
Out on the street, freedom marching
Saint Dominic's Preview
Out in the street
Look at the man
Turn around
Come back, come back
Turn around
Look at the man
Says hold on
Saint Dominic's Preview
Saint Dominic's Preview
Says hold me in
Saint Dominic's Preview

Speaking of John Lennon....

A belated "Happy Birthday" tribute... this seen last week at the Imagine mosaic at Strawberry Fields (NYC).
Yes indeed,** "we all shine on"....**

Instant Karma's gonna get you
Gonna knock you right on the head
You better get yourself together
Pretty soon you're gonna be dead
What in the world you thinking of
Laughing in the face of love
What on earth you tryin' to do
It's up to you, yeah you
Instant Karma's gonna get you
Gonna look you right in the face
Better get yourself together darlin'
Join the human race
How in the world you gonna see
Laughin' at fools like me
Who in the hell d'you think you are
A super star
Well, right you are
Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Well we all shine on
Ev'ryone come on
Instant Karma's gonna get you
Gonna knock you off your feet
Better recognize your brothers
Ev'ryone you meet
Why in the world are we here
Surely not to live in pain and fear
Why on earth are you there
When you're ev'rywhere
Come and get your share
Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Yeah we all shine on
Come on and on and on on on
Yeah yeah, alright, uh huh, ah
Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Yeah we all shine on
On and on and on on and on
Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Yeah we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun

Instant Karma

Maybe I’m Amazed - Paul McCartney Interview with Stephen Colbert - Sept. 23, 2019

Sir Beatle Paul McCartney was interviewed for most of the hour-long show by Colbert, and it was among the most genuine and interesting interviews I’ve seen with McCartney, over the decades. A long-time Beatles’ fan’s ultimate interview, filling in a lot of interesting details, with this deft and awestruck interviewing by Colbert.

Just wonderful... “Must see” for Beatles-Wings-McCartney fans. I tried to find the complete interview in one cohesive chunk (not presented that way yet) or even divided up so they could be seen a segment at a time in order. Here’s the latter, yeah yeah yeah!!

Part 1 - Paul McCarney - Intro/Thoughts on all those covers of Beatles Songs, about early days, and his sense of how all those songs came out of him.

Part 3 - “touches on the subject of loss, and in particular the way John Lennon's death has influenced his music and even his dreams, many decades later”. A look back on his life and Beatles experiences.

Maybe I’m Amazed - Paul McCartney Interview with Stephen Colbert (9/24/2019)

Sir Beatle Paul McCartney was interviewed for most of the hour-long show by Colbert, and it was among the most genuine and interesting interviews I’ve seen with McCartney, over the decades. A long-time Beatles’ fan’s ultimate interview, filling in a lot of interesting details, with this deft and awestruck interviewing by Colbert.

McCartney talks about being a Beatle, about John (who he dreams of), about what it feels like to be himself (which is humbling and psychologically fascinating). He speaks of his talent with music writing with 'mindfulness', using a metaphor of computers - having been like a data collector from his father’s music influences and simply “processing” all he had in his head and out came the songs. Some came in his sleep (Yesterday).

Stories about the music, his life as a Beatle, what it felt like at that moment, being back in the Ed Sullivan theater (where the Beatles debuted to an American audience), or being interviewed now by Colbert. And being a grand-dude. Colbert was gob-smacked, clearly, in his reverence and awe. And Paul was Paul. Some humor and little bits of info not shared before. No spoiler alerts here! Watch!

Of course, being Colbert, a few references were made (just in passing) to a new McCartney song about a mad king destroying the planet (guess who? The one who wears a face kept in a jar by the door?)

Just wonderful... “Must see” for Beatles-Wings-McCartney fans. I tried to find the complete interview in one cohesive chunk (not presented that way yet) or even divided up so they could be seen a segment at a time in order. Here’s the latter, yeah yeah yeah!!

Rather fascinating to me, maybe you too....

50 Years ago, 19 AUG 1969, some of the musicians just back from Woodstock gather for discussion/de-briefing with legendary host/interviewer Dick Cavett. Steven Stills still has mud on his pants. Grace Slick has some reflections on life. Fun. [10 mins]

Well, if "Echo of Laurel Canyon" got fairly panned (or at least accused of selective attention), this one by Scorcese is seeing much acclaim. Between Variety, and the fact of my 80-something mom liking this, I'd say the reviews are very good!
