Just a list of "default" android apps for those looking to run only #freesoftware
on an android compatible device. These shouldn't be taken as the absolute best of android floss but rather as a starting point.
App store: g-droid
G-droid lets you browse, (un)install, and apply updates for apps from the f-droid app repository. F-droid provides only 100% FOSS android apps. A nice side effect is increased privacy since builds remove proprietary trackers and many apps do not include trackers or ads to begin with.
Pros over official f-droid client:
Can write short reviews for apps using a mastodon account.
More friendly UI particularly when managing already installed f-droid apps
Does not currently support the easy app sharing features the official client has that allows you to beam installed f-droid APKs to other devices. You can still extract any installed APK using tools like this one
and then using a file manager to share over Bluetooth.
This is a version of Firefox for android with proprietary binaries removed. This is chosen over other browsers on f-droid for the extensions namely:HTTPS everywhere
, this encrypts website traffic where an HTTPS connection is known to both be available and not break the site, increasing privacy and security.ublock origin
content blocker extension, can block ads but more importantly keeps a list of malware & tracking URLS for blocking.
Music player: vanilla music
. Plays the audio formats supported by android's media framework and doesn't need internet access.
File manager: Simple file manager pro
Reliable file management with support for compressing and decompressing .zip archives
Can swipe to select multiple files without selecting all in directory.
Con-ish: may fail to move files if they are named with special characters
