Insurance won’t cover wheelchair for man with no legs

"Stories of people fighting with their insurance providers are all too common in America, but one man with zero legs is sharing what feels like a new low: His insurance company won’t get him a wheelchair."

"Around 2:30am on a mid-November night in 2017, good samaritan Mark Poss saw a couple whose car had broken down on the highway trying to push it to safety. He pulled over to help, but as they were moving the car, a drunk driver slammed his vehicle into them, instantly severing Poss’s legs."

"After about six months, Poss was able to start walking again with prosthetic legs. They help, but they don’t solve everything. Poss still deals with debilitating pain in his legs that is exacerbated by standing on the prosthetics. But when he submitted a claim to UnitedHealthcare requesting coverage for a wheelchair, the company denied it, BuzzFeed News reports."

Trump lawyer: he could not be prosecuted in office even if he publicly murdered someone (He can)

"In this recording, embedded below, Trump lawyer William Consovoy tells Judge Denny Chin that if President Donald Trump were to shoot someone on Fifth Avenue, he could not be investigated for the murder while in office. The context is oral arguments in Trump v. Vance, one of the legal efforts to get Trump, a famously unscrupulous and bankruptcy-prone businessman, to publicly disclose his tax returns."

Trump EPA Moves to Gut Clean Air Act by Deregulating a Major Greenhouse Gas

"On Thursday, the Trump administration announced plans to roll back an Obama-era regulation to cut methane emissions from power plants and fossil fuel infrastructure."

"Anne Idsal, the acting assistant administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), told the Wall Street Journal which broke the news, that administration questions whether methane 'should have been regulated in the first place'. If the rollback goes through, it could have consequences well beyond methane."

"The administration has been trying to overturn regulations affecting the dangerous greenhouse gas since Donald Trump entered the White House. The president, first, delayed the Obama rule and changed some technical aspects of it. The administration also went to court over it. So far, these efforts have failed. But this is his administration’s first attempt to completely kill the rule through a formal proposal."

I ran across this vintage image today on Wikipedia, after a discussion at $dayjob regarding engineering failures. While we were primarily discussing unexpected results that occur from certain situations with regards to software applications, the Internet, and several other factors, etc., there are a lot of good lessons to be learned from reviewing epic real-world engineering disasters. The engineering failure involving the 1940 Tacoma Narrows Bridge is well documented.

Also: I just realized this page exists on WIkipedia. Enjoy. :-)

"Residents of Worden and Ballantine, Montana — two tiny towns northeast of Billings — were recently informed they may be unable to use tap water for a year or more. Tests began detecting pollutants in the water back in May, but officials have been unable to pinpoint exactly where or how the groundwater supply is being contaminated. The people have been told to use bottled water only for the foreseeable future, a future of indeterminate length."

"The residents of Flint, Michigan, can relate. So can residents of Newark, New Jersey, and East Chicago, Indiana, along with thousands of other communities of color that are being poisoned by the water in their homes, schools, parks and businesses. Unlike Worden and Ballantine, whose water supply were likely poisoned by nitrates used in farming, Flint and the other municipalities have been dealing with the dangers of lead."

Just this aspect alone shows how criminal the G7 really is... People should be outraged.

The G7 Is Just Another Stage for a Presidential Sh*tshow

"Take the Amazon, for instance. The sprawling rainforest produces 20 percent of the world's oxygen and functions as a giant carbon sink to soak up the CO2 that we're pumping into the atmosphere, and which is imperiling the future of our species. According to The Intercept, 'Scientists warn that losing another fifth of Brazil’s rainforest will trigger the feedback loop known as dieback, in which the forest begins to dry out and burn in a cascading system collapse, beyond the reach of any subsequent human intervention or regret'. Sounds bad!"

"So, what was the response from the other G7 leaders—a group of actual human adults who are theoretically capable of devoting attention to issues that don't directly and immediately affect them, and also Boris Johnson? They agreed to fork over $20 million. That seems like a lot of money until you remember the world has pledged via donations $1.2 billion to rebuild the Notre Dame, a very nice cathedral which soaks up zero carbon dioxide. It probably cost more than $20 million to hold this event and get all the delegations there. Granted, it's hard to get a bunch of countries to agree on anything, but you'd think "breathing" is something we can all see is important."

"If Donald Trump were in virtually any other position of responsibility, action would already be under way to remove him from that role. The board at a public company would have replaced him outright or arranged a discreet shift out of power. (Of course, he would never have gotten this far in a large public corporation.) The chain-of-command in the Navy or at an airline or in the hospital would at least call a time-out, and check his fitness, before putting him back on the bridge, or in the cockpit, or in the operating room. Trump Is Melting Down Because China Won’t Give In on Trade

"President Trump is in the midst of a public meltdown that is humiliating, scary, and banana republic–y even by Trumpy standards. The reason is that Trump started a trade war and China refuses to back down, having announced this morning that it is imposing retaliatory tariffs on $75 billion worth of U.S. goods."

"Trump has picked fights with lots of countries. Usually they either placate him or try to give him a face-saving way of de-escalating (e.g., Mexico, which is never going to pay for the wall but doesn’t talk about the fact that it’s never going to pay for the wall anymore). Sometimes they get Trump to fold by stroking his ego (the North Koreans have carried out the most over-the-top version of this tactic)."

"China is playing it differently. Trump is pressuring China with tariff threats, on the theory that China, which is more export-dependent than the U.S., has more to lose from a trade war. China, apparently, calculates that it is Trump who has more to lose from a trade war, since he is facing reelection next year and Chinese president Xi Jinping is facing reelection … never. What’s more, China has little incentive to cough up permanent concessions in its trade relations with the U.S., given that there’s a better-than-even chance Trump will lose and it can just wait for the next president."

"This has provoked one of Trump’s wilder public tantrums."

"For years, U.S. election officials and voting machine vendors have insisted that critical election systems are never connected to the internet and therefore can’t be hacked."

"But a group of election security experts have found what they believe to be nearly three dozen backend election systems in 10 states connected to the internet over the last year, including some in critical swing states. These include systems in nine Wisconsin counties, in four Michigan counties, and in seven Florida counties—all states that are perennial battlegrounds in presidential elections."

"Some of the systems have been online for a year and possibly longer. Some of them disappeared from the internet after the researchers notified an information-sharing group for election officials last year. But at least 19 of the systems, including one in Florida’s Miami-Dade County, were still connected to the internet this week, the researchers told Motherboard."

"The researchers and Motherboard have been able to verify that at least some of the systems in Wisconsin, Rhode Island, and Florida are in fact election systems. FBI faces skepticism over its efforts against domestic terrorism

"Some veteran counterterrorism experts said the FBI and the federal government have done too little, despite concerns that have been building for more than a decade."

"Dave Gomez, a former FBI supervisor who oversaw terrorism cases, said he thinks FBI officials are wary of pursuing white nationalists aggressively because of the fierce political debates surrounding the issue."

"'I believe Christopher A. Wray is an honorable man, but I think in many ways the FBI is hamstrung in trying to investigate the white supremacist movement like the old FBI would', Gomez said. 'There’s some reluctance among agents to bring forth an investigation that targets what the president perceives as his base. It’s a no-win situation for the FBI agent or supervisor'."

Driving the president’s vitriol is, among other things, the fact that Cummings’ committee is investigating potential misconduct by Trump and his administration.
