Quote of note:

"If you're poor, you die earlier. Your health is worse. You have far fewer resources to deal with basic problems. Even if your kids get into a good college—the supposed magic way out through hard work—the chances of graduating are not even 13% of those in the top quarter of the economic heap. A sudden financial problem will devastate. You pray the car won't break down, the kids don't get sick, an old winter coat will last another year. Trump World and Senate GOPers Want to Jam Pelosi on Coronavirus Stimulus

"As Congress works to pass a coronavirus relief bill authored by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Senate Republicans are approaching the next round of response to the outbreak—a possibly trillion-dollar-plus stimulus bill—with a blunt message to Democrats: This one’s ours."

"Both privately and publicly, Senate Republicans have groused in recent days about having been sidelined during negotiations over what has become known as the Phase 2 deal to address the coronavirus pandemic. That bill, which passed by an overwhelming bipartisan margin last week in the House, focused on expanding paid sick leave, unemployment insurance, and food security for those affected by the outbreak, plus increasing testing capability for the virus."

"Republican leadership told members on Tuesday to swallow their gripes and pass the bill, citing the harsh demands of addressing a national crisis. Those members have found solace in the possibility of turning the tables on Pelosi and House Democrats when the next phase of coronavirus response is soon considered. That bill, known as Phase 3, is set to be a sweeping response to a cratering economy. And with the House of Representatives on recess and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) vowing to keep the Senate in session until a stimulus is approved, the GOP will almost certainly have the first shot."

"'Respirators, ventilators, all of the equipment — try getting it yourselves', Mr. Trump told the governors during the conference call, a recording of which was shared with The New York Times."

"'We will be backing you, but try getting it yourselves. Point of sales, much better, much more direct if you can get it yourself'."

Italy's coronavirus toll surges as worries grow over hospitals

"Italy recorded 368 more deaths from the coronavirus outbreak on Sunday, its biggest one day rise, amid growing concern about the ability of its strained health system to cope with the relentless increase in new cases."

"With 24,747 cases and 1,809 deaths by Sunday - a rise of 368 or 25% in the death toll in just 24 hours - Italy’s experience has offered an alarming example for other European countries which have begun seeing sharp rises in cases over recent days."

He is such a divisive and polarizing figure that he long ago lost the ability to unite the nation under any circumstances and for any cause. Worth a read for you history buffs out there...

Quote of note:

"The modern world has suddenly become reacquainted with the oldest traveling companion of human history: existential dread and the fear of unavoidable, inscrutable death. No vaccine or antibiotic will save us for the time being. Because this experience has become foreign to modern people, we are, by and large, psychologically and culturally underequipped for the current coronavirus pandemic."

"To find the moral resources to tackle COVID-19, both its possible death toll and the fear that stalks our communities alongside the disease, we have to look at the resources built in the past. For me, that means examining how people of my tradition, Christians, and especially Lutherans, have handled the plagues of the past. And while people of all faiths, and none, are facing the disease, the distinctive approach to epidemics Christians have adopted over time is worth dusting off."

"The Christian response to plagues begins with some of Jesus’s most famous teachings: 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you'; 'Love your neighbor as yourself'; 'Greater love has no man than this, that he should lay down his life for his friends'. Put plainly, the Christian ethic in a time of plague considers that our own life must always be regarded as less important than that of our neighbor."

Trump administration blocks states from using Medicaid to respond to coronavirus crisis

"Despite mounting pleas from California and other states, the Trump administration isn’t allowing states to use Medicaid more freely to respond to the coronavirus crisis by expanding medical services."

"In previous emergencies, including the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Hurricane Katrina and the H1N1 flu outbreak, both Republican and Democratic administrations loosened Medicaid rules to empower states to meet surging needs."

"But months into the current global disease outbreak, the White House and senior federal health officials haven’t taken the necessary steps to give states simple pathways to fully leverage the mammoth safety net program to prevent a wider epidemic."

"That’s making it harder for states to quickly sign up poor patients for coverage so they can get necessary testing or treatment if they are exposed to coronavirus."

This is craaaaazzzzzzzy.... I'm sitting here watching this 2 hour coronavorus special on CNN, and they are interviewing this guy still in isolation at Travis Air Force base that was evacuated from the Diamond Princess cruiseliner in Japan on 17 February. He keeps on testing positive for coronavirus, even though he has been in isolation for ~28 days, and the authorities there require 3 negative tests before they will accept the results (they are being very conservative in their protocol there apparently). This suggest there might actually be a false positive with the current test in that it could be falsely reporting an infection after the virus has died/gone dormant. Wow.

Profound quote of note (I have chosen to include the majority of Jim's post):

"...there are a few things that show us that reality is setting in in our society, if not necessarily in the White House. Virtually all professional and college sports are now shut down. Most universities are online only now. Many public schools have closed. More and more businesses are allowing employees to work from home."

"We are now in a liminal space. Our church introduced me to that term while we are searching to replace a minister who recently retired. A liminal space is that time between what was and what will be. Thanks to COVID-19, normal is what was. It is gone and will be gone for quite some time."

"Sadly, the beneficial effects of the social distancing that is finally coming into being will be delayed. Before we get to the benefits, we will experience the whirlwind that has been unleashed by months of denying the virus. This is just my estimate, but from all the published comparisons between the US outbreak and Italy’s, we are just a few days, probably less than a week, away from hospitals in the hot zones being over capacity and having to resort to excruciating levels of triage, literally choosing who lives and who dies."

"Also, Republicans are being dragged kicking and screaming into the realization that our healthcare system and our gig economy mean that huge swathes of our population, without government intervention, face bankruptcy and death with no chance of treatment."

"Each of us will have to choose how we live in this liminal space. For those who are able to go along with social distancing, we will need to learn to eat all our meals at home. We will need to find ways to occupy our time if we aren’t working and the usual sports entertainment is unavailable. But it is vital that we realize that despite being physically separated, we must embrace our shared humanity and the shared experience of facing the unknown together."

"Maybe there’s someone who lives close to you who is even higher risk than you are. Perhaps you can give them a call and ask if they’d like you to leave a meal at their door. Maybe you have acquaintances whose employment has disappeared today. Maybe you can slip them a few bucks if you can afford it. Maybe they’d also like a meal at their door."

"Even more frightening, is the 'what will be' for folks who must continue working. Somehow, grocery stores will have to stay open. Police and fire services have to continue, along with EMS, of course. Healthcare workers are soon to be completely overwhelmed and most likely sequestered for the duration of the outbreak in areas where hospitals near capacity. If you know families of those workers, maybe they could use a hand with errands or meals. They will be terrified about their loved ones staying healthy while on the front lines of this battle. Support those families any way you can."
