A set of 604 curated "locally notable" G+ profiles

https://pastebin.com/raw/0Wh4BJah

This list comes from a set of contributions from +Eli Fennell's listing here:

https://plus.google.com/110619855408549015935/posts/XrZkNKam1Jo

Though not strictly-speaking "signal flares", I've submitted the profiles to the Internet Archive's Wayback machine (scripted via the "Save" URL) -- that part took about 90 seconds. Sorting out grabbing all the profile names and IDs from G+ HTML (and wrestling with local systems) a couple of hours.

A really good reason to pin a #signalflare post is that that pinned post WILL SHOW UP IN THE INTERNET ARCHIVE when saved.

(I'll schedule another save or few of this through April 2.)

This'd be a good set of folks to keep tabs on and through whom to find others.

I'll be adding this to the #PlexodusWiki Notable Names Database (NNDB) ... eventually:

Bodie Casino

Bodie is now a "ghost town" - said to be the largest intact example of life during the early gold-boom era. Bodie was a late-comer after being written off as a loser - until a mine collapse in the early 1870's revealed huge deposits of gold..

For a while this was a big boom town. Hard work in the stamp mill (pounding the gold out of the rock and separating it), but with good union wages. Worked hard, played hard. Sunday the mill closed. Frontier life.

Rowdy on the North Side of town. In the end most of the town was burnt down by a toddler. Interesting history, now preserved in "arrested decay" by the state historical park system.

This is an actual saloon/casino exactly as it was when the last hand was dealt and Bodie became the "ghost town" it is today. Cashed out, now a lot of dust.

G+ Migration Post Mortem: What went well, what went poorly, what are lessons learned?

We're now well into the post-Google+ period, and I'd like to open up the question of how things went.

I've got my own mental list of things which went well or poorly in the process, of the latter, many of which involve myself.

This is open to contributions and discussion.

Discussion here or at PlexodusReddit.

There's a Plexodus Wiki Post Mortem page open as well.

Song for the Day

Things We Said Today - Beatles

Released around the time G+ announced our demise. This is an official (HQ) version from the Beatles, "here to stay"
Timely.

LYRICS:
You say you will love me
If I have to go
You'll be thinking of me
Somehow I will know
Someday when I'm lonely
Wishing you weren't so far away
Then I will remember
The things we said today
You say you'll be mine, girl
'Til the end of time
These days such a kind girl
Seems so hard to find
Someday when we're dreaming
Deep in love, not a lot to say
Then we will remember
The things we said today
Me, I'm just the lucky kind
Love to hear you say that love is luck
And, though we may be blind
Love is here to stay
And that's enough
To make you mine, girl
Be the only one
Love me all the time, girl
We'll go on and on
Someday when we're dreaming
Deep in love, not a lot to say
Then we will remember
Things we said today
Me, I'm just the lucky kind
Love to hear you say that love is luck
And, though we may be blind
Love is here to stay
And that's enough
To make you mine, girl
Be the only one
Love me all the time, girl
We'll go on and on
Someday when we're dreaming
Deep in love, not a lot to say
Then we will remember
The things we said today

ArchiveTeam uploading of Google+ content to the Internet Archive

So it turns out that fetching data from Google was only part of the archiving process -- the other is sending that to the Internet Archive. That's what this image (and link to the tracker) shows. About 2/3 complete by my eyeballing here:

https://atdash.meo.ws/d/3-kDz8Emz/telegraf-aggregated-stats?orgId=1&fullscreen&panelId=9&from=now-15d&to=now

(That's going to be relatively current for the next day or so, given it's a relative date offset of about 15 days.)

I've also heard that the Communities fetch may not have been as successful as hoped. Again, that was intended to capture effectively the paginated views of G+ communities, though it was an additional goal, and started late in the process. The contents should (mostly) make their way to the Archive, but it may not be easy to navigate by Community there.

And there is an Archive Team Google+ Archive Collection at the Internet Archive which makes navigation a bit cleaner: https://archive.org/details/archiveteam_googleplus

What’s left of Google+ is now called Currents | TechCrunch

Google+ for consumers is officially dead, but it’s still alive for enterprise users. Only a few days after completely shutting down the public version of Google+, Google today announced that it is giving the enterprise version a new name. It’s now called Currents.

Hey everyone, I’m #newhere. I’m interested in #art, #coaching, #googleplus, #literature, #poetry, #quotes and oodles of other stuff. I signed up over here because, as you all know, Google+ is shutting down.I'm basically dilly-dallying on the internets (whimsical, eclectic and at times NSFW). I do have another account at #diaspora but couldn't use the credentials over here. Guess I have to figure out how it works exactly, with pods and the Federation.

Friends+Me Google+ Exporter can still access images & video

If you're like me, well, first, my deepest sympathies, but you've used F+MGE to capture your posts and other text content, but were saving images for later, only to be caught by the Google+ shutdown.

Turns out that googleusercontent.com is still serving up those images (this may be data that's harder for Google to remove), so you can still fetch media content through Google+ Exporter.

Hop on that now if you're interested.

You can't make this up... when the plug was pulled (finally) today and people slowly started getting whack-a-moled from Google+, I logged in on my laptop and was met with this little question:

Image/Photo

Like, for real? You really wanna know the answer to that question right now?

Image/Photo

I choose "Very Dissatisfied" for the record. And I was apparently not the only G Suite user getting this stupid message.

G+ ... what remains

I posted this when I was using my GSuite account to a community that I'm in.

What use does Google think that one-sided conversations are in a community? Why in the world would they delete the posts of consumer accounts from conversations and then expect them to be of use?

I can still access #googleplus from my phone.

Sad Note: 1PM Mountain View Time, 4PM New York Time - my last post (photo of a ghost town and report of functional failings), and suddenly I could see only my last post, and then only 2 communities, and then poof... this. diaspora* HQ - 2019-04-02 17:15:10 GMT

Hello and a big welcome

to everyone new to diaspora\*

With Google+ closing today, you might have just signed up to diaspora* looking for a new home. We're so pleased that you've decided to give diaspora* a try. It's fantastic that you've joined us! We have a big existing community of former G+ users, and you could try tags such as #gplusrefugee and #googleplus to connect with people you know from G+.

We hope that you quickly find your way here, and enjoy getting connected with people and content.

Here's a few tips for getting started:- There are some step-by-step tutorials on our project website covering the basics of how diaspora* works, and how to get connected with people. There's a link to these in the side-bar, should you ever want to read them in future, and there's also an in-app Help section you can access through your user menu (at the right-hand end of the header bar).
- You can search for people by name or by diaspora* ID (which looks like an email address), if you know it, from the search field in the header bar. You can invite people to join you in diaspora* by sending them a link to our project website, from where they can choose their own pod to register with. Your friends don't need to be on the same pod as you in order to connect and communicate with you.
- One good way to start getting connected with people is to start following some #tags of subjects that interest you (maybe #music, #photography, #linux, or #activism ... whatever interests you) so that you will see content on those topics in your stream. You can then start following people whose posts you find interesting, by placing them into one of your aspects.
- If you have any questions, post something with the #question or #help tag, and people will try to help you. Make sure to make your post public so anyone who can help is able to see it!

diaspora\* has some very simple community guidelines, which we hope everyone will feel able to follow so that all members can have the best possible experience here.

We're trying to improve diaspora* all the time, fixing bugs, honing performance and adding new features. But how fast we can do this is limited by the time developers have. To improve diaspora* faster, we need more developers! If you've just signed up and can code, or know someone who can and who might be interested in joining our team, get in touch!

Archive Team are 59% through their stretch goal of archiving G+ Communities

"Googleplus2" a/k/a G2 is a project to archive all public G+ community content. This was a "stretch" goal of the Google+ archiving project.

The tracker here shows the full project, there are 81,270 or so work sets of 100 communities, and as of a few moments ago, the project was at 59% complete, with about 6 hours left to run at present rates.

The contents should appear at the Internet Archive in about a month or so, it'll take time to move it all there.

Tracker status below:

CLOSING TIME at Google+

I spent weeks trying to salvage content from G+, mostly photos, a few threads with photos and music links/discussions...
Now the countdown clock say one day left.

There is a still-active G+ community sharing memories, tributes, music, and more - "Lights Out", now an Irish Wake, until "The End".

Reverting to my DJ days, I've posted several musical picks, and today compiled them all into one post (on Google+).
So here I'm going to attempt to replicate that, since G+ is set for demolition beginning in about one day +/-.

Songs about the end of the road - end of the line - leaving - journeying to new lands - remembering the good...
All-purpose song list (from my vantage point of "classic rock") - but a special tribute to the wonderful residents of the land, R.I.P.

~~

Wooden Ships - Crosby, Stills & Nash

Go, take your sister then, by the hand,
lead her away from this foreign land,
Far away, where we might laugh again,
We are leaving - you don't need us.

And it's a fair wind, blowin' warm,
Out of the south over my shoulder,
Guess I'll set a course and go...

End of the Line -Traveling Wilburys

Well it's all right... sometimes you gotta be strong.
Well it's all right, even when push comes to shove.
Well it's all right, everything will work out fine.
We're going to the end of the line.

This Night Has Opened My Eyes - The Smiths

I'm not happy and I'm not sad...
She took away your troubles but then again she left pain.
Could of been a poet or could have been a fool..

Hey Jude - The Beatles

Take a sad song and make it better...

Ground Control to Major Tom (Space Oddity) - David Bowie

Ground Control to Major Tom
Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you "Here am I floating 'round my tin can
Far above the moon
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do"

Two of Us - The Beatles

Two of us Sunday driving
Not arriving
On our way back home
We're on our way home
We're on our way home
We're going home

Bookends - Simon & Garfunkel

Time it was, and what a time it was, it was....
Long ago it must be, I have a photograph..
Preserve your memories, they're all that's left you.

Big Yellow Taxi - Joni Mitchell

They paved paradise and put up a parking lot....
Don't it always seem to go,
That you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone?

The End - The Doors

This is the end, beautiful friend.

The End - The Beatles

**LAST WEEKEND / WATCH PARTY TIME - Google+ **

This Night Has Opened My Eyes

**"I'm not happy and I'm not sad" - The Smiths***
I am numb. Not necessarily comfortably.
More sad. And this song rolls in among the tunes and memories....

LYRICS:
In a river the color of lead
Immerse the baby's head
Wrap her up in the News Of The World
Dump her on a doorstep, girl
This night has opened my eyes
And I will never sleep again
You kicked and cried like a bullied child
A grown man of twenty-five
Oh, he said he'd cure your ills
But he didn't and he never will
Oh, save your life
Because you've only got one
The dream has gone
But the baby is real
Oh, you did a good thing
She could have been a poet
Or, she could have been a fool
Oh, you did a bad thing
And I'm not happy
And I'm not sad
A shoeless child on a swing
Reminds you of your own again
She took away your troubles
Oh, but then again
She left pain
So, please save your life
Because you've only got one
The dream has gone
But the baby is real
Oh, you did a good thing
She could have been a poet
Or, she could have been a fool
Oh, you did a bad thing
And I'm not happy
And I'm not sad
Oh...
And I'm not happy
And I'm not sad
Oh...
And I'm not happy
And I'm not sad

Here's one of a few live countdown clocks, all - like some of the parties &/or deathwatches - assuming/guessing "the switch" is pulled at midnight (somewhere) as 2 April 2019 dawns. G-E day.

Most see April 1 as the "beginning of the end" (continued), dismantling, etc., as users watch until someone delivers the 2nd injection. :(

Google+ got some things awfully wrong. They lost and they were hated.

But many of us thought it was the best social network that existed in its time.

Here are my thoughts, both on technical advantages and community:
The first of my planned articles about [1]messaging and social networking

Google plus had circles

... so unlike with twitter I didnʼt have to spam everyone to reach those two followers whoʼd actually care about that topic.

Example: I could add Norwegians I knew to my “Norwegians” circle so I could share links to Norwegian pages only to people I knew could read Norwegian.

Google plus had collections

... so unlike Facebook and Twitter, people who were interested in some of the same things as me wouldnʼt have to follow everything I ever posted.

Example: I had collections for:
\* Java (links and comments)
\* local stuff (my pictures from my town etc)
 \* retro stuff (c64 etc)

Google plus had groups

... kind of like Facebook groups but without having to deal with Facebook. (I now trust Google less than before as well, but Facebook has worked harder to earn their position as untrustworthy.)

They worked kind of like forums with topics, threads and members but:
\* with good ux
\* without signing up and in to 15 different places, all with their own ads for “their own app”.

Design and ux

The design was so much nicer, ux so much smoother than everything else.

It never really became mainstream

Google plus was really nice. So many nice posts. So little political spam. (A lot of other would-be spammers but we killed them within seconds every time it seems.)
Google forgot to add ads to it
)

It is going away anyway so it doesnʼt matter if I say it now.

A good friend has only days to live

It's good to see so many mourners on pluspora, the Googliest pod in the Fediverse.

Before anyone beats me to it, these lyrics and this song have been haunting me for a while now.
Just so true:

"Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot"

Here's to the G+host town...

Same end as another many of us know and love.

Falsely labeled but eventually made a self-fulfilling prophecy by Google, first killing off the functionality, disrupted social lives and in the end set to destroy the social graphs (AKA life works and memories) from once thriving and wonderful land of Google+.

Large and recently-active Google+ Communities dataset

A dataset of 103,188 larger and more-recently-active Google+ Communities is now available online, from my Google Drive account:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Pc_QmZE_RsGt2Irvm_BgEbFjRBssUOD9

This may be of interest to those who are seeking to contact active or thriving Google+ communities, to archive them, or to otherwise work with identified active communities.
What is this?

This is a subset of the full 8.1 million Google+ Communities, the vast majority of which have little or no publicly-visible activity or members. The subset does show both an appreciable membership and some degree of recent activity. Not every community in this list is active and healthy, but the ones that are are likely to be found here.

There's additional information, including membership counts, activity levels (visible posts, comments, plus-ones, and reshares), and some derived statistics, plus community titles, which may be useful in identifying communities highly likely to be active.

The file is a gzipped (compressed) textfile with comma-separated values, data fields in the first record. 103,189 records total.

Saving of public Google+ content at the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine by the Archive Team has begun

TL;DR: Most public Google+ content should live on at the Internet Archive thanks to a fanatical bunch of volunteers, and you can help.

Rather more at the link 😃

With the demise of Mr. Jingles, my plans and suggestions

I'd posted this to the rapidly-fading PLOOS, though some of the information applies here as well.

I'll be checking the Google+ Notifications page periodically, at least twice a day if possible. That's not as slick as the Notifications pane was, so expect slower responses to anything.

I'm trying to keep on top of the Google+ Mass Migration community, as well as the (much less active) Plexodus: The Beginning is Near community.

I've had a fair bit of personal stuff going on for the past few weeks which is making online time both less available and productive. My apologies.

The Plexodus Subreddit is an excellent place to get ongoing and post-sunset information. That would be on Google+, data migration (focusing much more on data import), contacts, where people are, and yes, yet more discussions about the past and future of social, online, and user-generated media.

https://old.reddit.com/r/plexodus

There's far too much updating to do at the #PlexodusWiki. So I'll try to tend to that garden as well:

https://social.antefriguserat.de

(It means "before it was cool", in Latin, if you're wondering.)

I'm still working on my future personal blog home. That'll be at GitLab, as a continuation of the Lair of the Id. Plan is to post original longer-form content there, then syndicate it elsewhere -- Mastodon, Diaspora, and the Lair subreddit (https://old.reddit.com/r/dredmorbius).

The New Lair blog will be: https://gitlab.com/dredmorbius/lair-of-the-id.git

For those of you who were Mirandans (or want to find out what the hell that was), there's still the /r/MKaTH and /r/MKaTS subreddits. I'm open to posting a bit more content there. MKaTH -- Miranda's Knitting and Tea House, is public, MKaTS -- Miranda's Knitting and Tea Society, is a related private forum:

https://old.reddit.com/r/MKaTH

For more on what that's about:
https://old.reddit.com/r/MKaTH/wiki/faq

There's also a more general Plusser's subreddit, /r/PLOOS:

https://old.reddit.com/r/ploos/

Otherwise, I'm posting at Mastodon, Diaspora, Tildes, Reddit, Hacker News, and a few other haunts, generally as "dredmorbius", as promised.

10481 Users

It was just about 2 weeks ago we were waiting for the number of Users on Pluspora to reach 10k.

We're long past that point and now its a matter of when do we hit 11k?

There's still a goodly number of folks over on G+ that are posting and have not yet chosen a landing point or even been by for a look-see. Encouraging them along before the lights go out would be a useful thing for folks in our growing community to do... make sure that if your account is still there to let them know where you'll be and what name etc you'll be here under!

We have a LOT of Good People here. We have a LOT of content flowing and a LOT of discussions going on.

And if you yourself are #newhere be sure to make a post or two about your interests.... what do you like talking about? Do we know you from G+ ? Even if all you plan on doing is lurking for a month or two and seeing what it is all about, a post will let you in the door better since there are a lot of Private/Behind Closed Doors conversations going on here as well as the ones in the main public stream.
