What person, group, idea, or object "for better or for worse... has done the most to influence the events of the year"?

Wikipedia POTY.

#poty #PersonOfTheYear
I would say health workers.
I ... have thoughts. Am sitting on them for now.
Well, Kanye West. Could there be any other? j/k
Health Workers, "essential workers" would be a no brainer
This year? I'm thinking Dr. Anthony Fauci. This moment is the culmination of an extensive career and journey spanning multiple administrations and epidemics. And the whims of history has made it ... complicated.
As much as I hate Donald Trump, 2020 has basically been all about his policies, his responses to events, his ideas. He's a fucking horrible excuse for a human being, but 2020 has basically been the year of Trump.
Yeah, but you could say the same of the last four years. He already was POTY in 2016, and it's been a continuous cluster-fudging ever since. POTUS Trump has been doing this stuff almost as long as Brexit so far.

This pandemic is a once-in-a-century thing; maybe more.
I'd argue for Fauci as well.

Trump's 'achievements' have been the result of negligence, gross mismanagement, and temper tantrums.
Yeah, you've probably sold me on Fauci.
I'd go for "object". SARS-CoV-2.
Curious if anyone might have group suggestions.
The researchers doing research
To sarcastically point them out as not the person of next year, as a group those currently aligning with 45's contention that he won the election. They can vaguely read off "SARS-CoV-2" btw, taking SAR as alluding to SARcasm, 2 to 2nd term, V to victory, and Co to Companions.
Fauci, healthcare workers and SARS-CoV2 were three that had occurred to me.

  • Patient Zero, whomever that was.
  • The WHO.
  • Front-line / key / essential workers.
  • Denialsts.
  • Tucker Carlson / Sean Hannity / Rupert Murdoch.
  • Charles Koch. He read his brother's obituary afterward, a sneak preview of his own might be justice.
  • Disinformation.
  • The Plutonomy.
  • American Voters.
  • The Mercers.
  • Black Lives Matter.
  • George Floyd.
  • Catastrophic Risk.
  • Societal Dysfunction.
  • Xi Jinping.
  • A changing Earth.
Honorable mentions: Joe Biden, AOC. Their time will come.

Speaking of insanity. Uncle Joe -> #POTY??? It really happened, though.
@V. T. Eric Layton: 2016, 2010, 2007, 2001, 1999, 1995.

And 2006 --- never trusted them for a minute.

Note, for better or worse.
As to your question, though...

I would nominate for #POTY:KNOW that you are all appreciated by me and MANY others here in this venue!

And NO! I have not been nipping on the bourbon as of yet. ;)
@V. T. Eric Layton I'm flattered. Since it would be unseemly for you to do it, I'll nominate you for that list.
Aww so sweet @V. T. Eric Layton

Back at you...
@V. T. Eric Layton me? you really have no scruples my friend :)
I raise Qanon for consideration. Not at the top in terms of direct influence, perhaps, but...
Nope @John Hummel. That would be like putting Hitler on the cover...again.
And ain't that a comment on our current circumstances, @Katherine Bond.
@John Hummel I considered them, though disinfo / Mercers should cover that.
Agreed, @Doc Edward Morbius, and it's closer to the source.
James Clyburn.
I'm on board with Fauci.

I also have respect for General Mattis, who resigned, kept a respectful (to the office) silence for a year, and then let Trump have both barrels.
@Phil Stracchino Yes. The top-brass at the Pentagon is composed of a wealth of such people. I always got along well with the military people I've worked with. They, like me, are allergic to bullshit. They are also, by definition, very smart and well-behaved, or they wouldn't be there. Very easy to get along with such people.
Damn! Gonna' have to get used to the new @Katherine Bond avatar image. ;)
@frater chaos... Yes, you! You've spent a goodly amount of your time here dispelling bullshit and rumor. That alone is an achievement of which to be proud. Yeah... it's true that you're a grump ol' intolerant bastard, too, but... ;)
@Phil Landmeier (ᚠ)... I'm guessing my natural herbal remedies/bourbon infused Heavy Metal music splattering across your Stream was NOT the qualifying merit of the nomination. ;)
Sorry @V. T. Eric Layton. Thought it was time to class up my avatar for the holiday. ;)
I’ll try to stay with Girl with a Pearl Earring til we don’t need masks anymore...or maybe I won’t.

Who knows.
Hey... variety is the spice of life. Which reminds me,, I need to change to my Christmas avatar. ;)
Good idea :)
@V. T. Eric Layton I must admit that when I see POTY, I think of something completely different. As a ham radio guy, I'm gearing up to participate in something called POTA -- Parks On The Air. The idea is that you set up a portable operation in a park or other notable spot and put that spot on the air. Lots of hams collect these things, so you make hundreds of contacts across the country and around the world in a short period of time. It's lots of fun.

A friend here already does it and is building an antenna tower trailer setup. I'm working on an enclosed emergency communications trailer with heating and A/C, three operating positions, computers, precision time base, and all forms of digital communication, that also mounts an antenna tower. And, we plan to work together.

So...POTA. hahahaha
@Phil Landmeier (ᚠ) Like Field Day, only less scheduled?
@Mark Wollschlager Exactly -- for the person activating the park or location it's necessarily done Field Day style. It grew out of the County Hunter thing.
We have met the POTY and they is us.
trump will never get it... he hasn't been POTY trained
@frater chaos Already has, actually.
still a good joke...
I see the logic for that choice. In all the craziness, it was easy to lose sight of how significant Harris's election is.

And back a few weeks ago it wouldn't have been so obvious that the DOTUS would still be denying this election. Time's POTY choice emphasizes to the racist regressives that yes - this election really did hapen. (Including to, of course, the racist regressive in chief.)
Also possibly worth pondering ... count how many times the Democrats have lost a Presidential election with a black person on the ticket.
It won't change their viewpoint though. The ones denying it will only double down. Women and black or brown people occupying the Oval Office just isn't a thing. God gave this world to THEM. He said so. Personally. In writing.
@Isaac Kuo: Nate Silver commented (or repeated) the observation that Democrats have won every time they’ve had a Black on the ticket, and lost every time they haven’t, this century. Mind, n=4, small sample. But suggestive. Key in GA, MI, PA, WI.

AZ would have been lost without the native American vote, too.
