An OTM error in "Who Owns the Future?" No, Google did not exit social media in 2014

In an otherwise excellent programme, and her own otherwise insightful commentary, OTM guest Dina Srinivasan incorrectly comments that Google "exited social media" in 2014. This is not true, nor does it reflect Facebook's perceptions at the time by available evidence, though Facebook was very much the dominant online social network by 2014. The assertion mars Srinivasan's analysis.

Reading a prepublication draft of "The Antitrust Case Against Facebook" at SSRN, the claim seems to centre on one of several former Google social networking offerings, Orkut:
By 2014, competitors had exited the market, Google’s competitive offering Orkut shut down,76 and Facebook’s monopoly was complete ...
(p. 23)

The statement is true as far as it goes: Google social media platform Orkut was shuttered on September 30, 2014. However it was by the time quite marginal, having peak appeal in Brazil, and claiming 66 million users (by unknown qualification) as of 2011.

The problem with Srinivasan's claim is that Orkut was not, and is not, Google's only social media offering. Others include Google Buzz (shuttered October 14, 2011), Google Wave (shuttered August 2010, spun off to the ... now discontinued ... Free Software project Apache Wave), Google+ (launched June 2011, shuttered April 2019), and YouTube (extant). As the public is becoming aware, Google enters, and exits, product niches with some frequency. It's become something of a bitter joke in the tech community. See https://killedbygoogle.com or the tech discussion site Hacker News where new Google product announcements are largely met with collective yawns and the evergreen question "when will Google shut this down?"

As of 2014, Google+ was very much positioned as a Facebook competitor:

Another Try by Google to Take On Facebook by Claire Cain Miller, June 28, 2011
Google has tried several times, without much success, to take on Facebook and master social networking. Now it is making its biggest effort yet.

On Tuesday, Google introduced a social networking service called the Google+ project — which happens to look a lot like Facebook.
And Facebook appears to have taken the threat seriously. From Wired (which also cites Srinivasan extensively):
The most revealing insight comes from the summer of 2011, when the company was gearing up to fend off the threat of Google’s rival platform, Google+. The complaint quotes an email in which Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg wrote, “For the first time, we have real competition and consumers have real choice … we will have to be better to win.” At the time, Facebook had been planning to remove users’ ability to untag themselves in photos. One unnamed executive suggested pumping the brakes. “If ever there was a time to AVOID controversy, it would be when the world is comparing our offerings to G+,” they wrote. Better, they suggested, to save such changes “until the direct competitive comparisons begin to die down.” This is close to a smoking gun: evidence that, as Srinivasan hypothesized, Facebook preserves user privacy when it fears competition and degrades privacy when it doesn’t.
"The Smoking Gun in the Facebook Antitrust Case"
Gilad Edelman, 12.09.2020 07:42 PM

There's also ex-FB exec Antonio García Martínez's 2016 account:

"How Mark Zuckerberg Led Facebook's War to Crush Google Plus" by Antonio García Martínez, June 3, 2016
Google Plus was Google finally taking note of Facebook and confronting the company head-on, rather than via cloak-and-dagger recruitment shenanigans and catty disses at tech conferences. It hit Facebook like a bomb. Zuck took it as an existential threat comparable to the Soviets’ placing nukes in Cuba in 1962. Google Plus was the great enemy’s sally into our own hemisphere, and it gripped Zuck like nothing else. He declared “Lockdown,” the first and only one during my time there. As was duly explained to the more recent employees, Lockdown was a state of war that dated to Facebook’s earliest days, when no one could leave the building while the company confronted some threat, either competitive or technical.
Mind: despite being a very active user, I'll be the first to admit that Google+ had its limitations, including reach and uptake by the public. Google+ could claim a large number of user profiles, literally billions, as through about 2016, every new Gmail or Android user was automatically registered with the service, totaling about 3.5 billion profiles. Google were immensely cagey about just how many of these were actively using the site, offering statistics which were openly scoffed at in the press. I realised that a measurement was in fact possible, and determined that only 9% of users ever posted publicly to the service, and 0.16% (about 4--6 million) had a public post within the preceeding month. This is NOT the industry standard measure of monthly or daily "active users" (MUA, DAU), but does give a strong indication of activity.

https://ello.co/dredmorbius/post/naya9wqdemiovuvwvoyquq

(Yes, I am the king of underutilised social media services.)

Independently corroborated (on a 10x larger sample) by online marketing consultancy Stone Temple (now Perficient): https://blogs.perficient.com/2015/04/14/real-numbers-for-the-activity-on-google-plus/

Four million active users ain't nothin'. But it's extraordinarily small stakes in the online world, where mainstream services boast user counts in the hundreds of millions to billions (430m MAU for Reddit, 2 billion at YouTube, 186 million Twitter, 2.4 billion Facebook), with some 3.4 billion users worldwide. Even allowing for lurkers, Google+ active users were likely in the 10--100m range maximum.

Arguably the largest current Google social media offering, however, is YouTube, claiming 2 billion MUA in 2019, and the second most visited website worldwide overall, following Google Web Search. Facebook is number 6, and spots 3--5 are all Chinese.
Adapted from an email to OTM regarding the error.

But now it's tough to cheer as they are being challenged, considering the source - equal or more evil #trumpvirus "justice", i.e. #Barr .

Well, in the words of our latest national motto, "we'll see what happens". As once again we see how low the Barr can go.

Ghost Town - Pt. 3

Bodie Barber Shop and Saloon/Casino

A work in progress… from home. Another ghost town at the moment. This gold-rush era mining town long intrigued me.
This is what I was working on a year ago, ironically, in the very last days before the creation of another “ghost town”, G+.

A work in progress using some unexpected #stayhome time. I'm working to refurbish and update/improve the “Collection” I had been working on at the time #googleplus told us to be prepared to be obliterated like an #evilgoogle virus.

The world is now transforming, some to ghost towns and others to new realities. For the living: Stay Safe!

I've just begun playing - the page is a working draft thus far. But suddenly finding more #stayhome time, I've begun to reconstruct something like the "Collection" I had been working on at the time #googleplus told us to be prepared to be obliterated. Deja vu

Slightly OT: if you are in it for the long run, why it makes sense for users to bet on open-source and open-standards:

Because in the long run, proprietary, closed-source solutions tend to become evolutionary dead-ends.

Which might also be one of the reasons for having a serious look at the open-source social-media platforms (e.g. https://fediverse.party/). They may not look as hip and evolve as fast as their proprietary commercial competitors, but might still be around in a decade or so.

Hello and a big welcome

to everyone new to diaspora\*

With Google+ closing today, you might have just signed up to diaspora* looking for a new home. We're so pleased that you've decided to give diaspora* a try. It's fantastic that you've joined us! We have a big existing community of former G+ users, and you could try tags such as #gplusrefugee and #googleplus to connect with people you know from G+.

We hope that you quickly find your way here, and enjoy getting connected with people and content.

Here's a few tips for getting started:
  • There are some step-by-step tutorials on our project website covering the basics of how diaspora* works, and how to get connected with people. There's a link to these in the side-bar, should you ever want to read them in future, and there's also an in-app Help section you can access through your user menu (at the right-hand end of the header bar).
  • You can search for people by name or by diaspora* ID (which looks like an email address), if you know it, from the search field in the header bar. You can invite people to join you in diaspora* by sending them a link to our project website, from where they can choose their own pod to register with. Your friends don't need to be on the same pod as you in order to connect and communicate with you.
  • One good way to start getting connected with people is to start following some #tags of subjects that interest you (maybe #music, #photography, #linux, or #activism ... whatever interests you) so that you will see content on those topics in your stream. You can then start following people whose posts you find interesting, by placing them into one of your aspects.
  • If you have any questions, post something with the #question or #help tag, and people will try to help you. Make sure to make your post public so anyone who can help is able to see it!
diaspora\* has some very simple community guidelines, which we hope everyone will feel able to follow so that all members can have the best possible experience here.

We're trying to improve diaspora* all the time, fixing bugs, honing performance and adding new features. But how fast we can do this is limited by the time developers have. To improve diaspora* faster, we need more developers! If you've just signed up and can code, or know someone who can and who might be interested in joining our team, get in touch!

<3 diaspora\*

ArchiveTeam uploading of Google+ content to the Internet Archive

So it turns out that fetching data from Google was only part of the archiving process -- the other is sending that to the Internet Archive. That's what this image (and link to the tracker) shows. About 2/3 complete by my eyeballing here:

https://atdash.meo.ws/d/3-kDz8Emz/telegraf-aggregated-stats?orgId=1&fullscreen&panelId=9&from=now-15d&to=now

(That's going to be relatively current for the next day or so, given it's a relative date offset of about 15 days.)

I've also heard that the Communities fetch may not have been as successful as hoped. Again, that was intended to capture effectively the paginated views of G+ communities, though it was an additional goal, and started late in the process. The contents should (mostly) make their way to the Archive, but it may not be easy to navigate by Community there.

And there is an Archive Team Google+ Archive Collection at the Internet Archive which makes navigation a bit cleaner: https://archive.org/details/archiveteam_googleplus

Google+ grieving took me like 10 days to set in. A delay typical of me, good with imagining except for what most people use imagination for: to dream themselves up into pictures of the future.

I was befuddled these last days by a rising desire to weep with no proximal cause.

JONI MITCHELL: Night Ride Home
First time posting "here", but an annual post for me, over the years, on #googleplus

Night Ride Home - Joni Mitchell

My favorite 4th of July/Summertime song, probably.

Listen loud in a quiet spot, and enjoy the crickets!

LYRICS:
Once in a while
In a big blue moon
There comes a night like this
Like some surrealist
Invented this fourth of July
Night ride home
Hula girls
And caterpillar tractors in the sand
The ukulele man
The fireworks
This 4th of July
Night ride home
I love the man beside me
We love the open road
No phones till Friday
Far from the overkill
Far from the overload
Back at the bar
The band tears down
But out here in the headlight beams
The silver power lines
Gleam
On this fourth of July
Night ride home
Round the curve
And a big dark horse
Red taillights on his hide
Is keeping right alongside
Rev for stride
Fourth of July
Night ride home
I love the man beside me
We love the open road
No phones till Friday
Far from the undertow
Far from the overload
Once in awhile
In a big blue moon
There comes a night like this
Like some surrealist
Invented this fourth of July
Night ride home
Night ride home
Night ride home
On a night ride home
On a night ride home
Night ride home

G+ Migration Post Mortem: What went well, what went poorly, what are lessons learned?

We're now well into the post-Google+ period, and I'd like to open up the question of how things went.

I've got my own mental list of things which went well or poorly in the process, of the latter, many of which involve myself.

This is open to contributions and discussion.

Discussion here or at PlexodusReddit.

There's a Plexodus Wiki Post Mortem page open as well.

A set of 604 curated "locally notable" G+ profiles

https://pastebin.com/raw/0Wh4BJah

This list comes from a set of contributions from +Eli Fennell's listing here:

https://plus.google.com/110619855408549015935/posts/XrZkNKam1Jo

Though not strictly-speaking "signal flares", I've submitted the profiles to the Internet Archive's Wayback machine (scripted via the "Save" URL) -- that part took about 90 seconds. Sorting out grabbing all the profile names and IDs from G+ HTML (and wrestling with local systems) a couple of hours.

A really good reason to pin a #signalflare post is that that pinned post WILL SHOW UP IN THE INTERNET ARCHIVE when saved.

(I'll schedule another save or few of this through April 2.)

This'd be a good set of folks to keep tabs on and through whom to find others.

I'll be adding this to the #PlexodusWiki Notable Names Database (NNDB) ... eventually:

Bodie Casino

Bodie is now a "ghost town" - said to be the largest intact example of life during the early gold-boom era. Bodie was a late-comer after being written off as a loser - until a mine collapse in the early 1870's revealed huge deposits of gold..

For a while this was a big boom town. Hard work in the stamp mill (pounding the gold out of the rock and separating it), but with good union wages. Worked hard, played hard. Sunday the mill closed. Frontier life.

Rowdy on the North Side of town. In the end most of the town was burnt down by a toddler. Interesting history, now preserved in "arrested decay" by the state historical park system.

This is an actual saloon/casino exactly as it was when the last hand was dealt and Bodie became the "ghost town" it is today. Cashed out, now a lot of dust.

Song for the Day

Things We Said Today - Beatles

Released around the time G+ announced our demise. This is an official (HQ) version from the Beatles, "here to stay"
Timely.

LYRICS:
You say you will love me
If I have to go
You'll be thinking of me
Somehow I will know
Someday when I'm lonely
Wishing you weren't so far away
Then I will remember
The things we said today
You say you'll be mine, girl
'Til the end of time
These days such a kind girl
Seems so hard to find
Someday when we're dreaming
Deep in love, not a lot to say
Then we will remember
The things we said today
Me, I'm just the lucky kind
Love to hear you say that love is luck
And, though we may be blind
Love is here to stay
And that's enough
To make you mine, girl
Be the only one
Love me all the time, girl
We'll go on and on
Someday when we're dreaming
Deep in love, not a lot to say
Then we will remember
Things we said today
Me, I'm just the lucky kind
Love to hear you say that love is luck
And, though we may be blind
Love is here to stay
And that's enough
To make you mine, girl
Be the only one
Love me all the time, girl
We'll go on and on
Someday when we're dreaming
Deep in love, not a lot to say
Then we will remember
The things we said today

Friends+Me Google+ Exporter can still access images & video

If you're like me, well, first, my deepest sympathies, but you've used F+MGE to capture your posts and other text content, but were saving images for later, only to be caught by the Google+ shutdown.

Turns out that googleusercontent.com is still serving up those images (this may be data that's harder for Google to remove), so you can still fetch media content through Google+ Exporter.

Hop on that now if you're interested.

You can't make this up... when the plug was pulled (finally) today and people slowly started getting whack-a-moled from Google+, I logged in on my laptop and was met with this little question:

Image/Photo

Like, for real? You really wanna know the answer to that question right now?

I choose "Very Dissatisfied" for the record. And I was apparently not the only G Suite user getting this stupid message.

Sad Note: 1PM Mountain View Time, 4PM New York Time - my last post (photo of a ghost town and report of functional failings), and suddenly I could see only my last post, and then only 2 communities, and then poof... this. Have some screenshots and a 30" vid of it falling apart. :(((((((((( Rest in Peace Google+

CLOSING TIME at Google+

I spent weeks trying to salvage content from G+, mostly photos, a few threads with photos and music links/discussions...
Now the countdown clock say one day left.

There is a still-active G+ community sharing memories, tributes, music, and more - "Lights Out", now an Irish Wake, until "The End".

Reverting to my DJ days, I've posted several musical picks, and today compiled them all into one post (on Google+).
So here I'm going to attempt to replicate that, since G+ is set for demolition beginning in about one day +/-.

Songs about the end of the road - end of the line - leaving - journeying to new lands - remembering the good...
All-purpose song list (from my vantage point of "classic rock") - but a special tribute to the wonderful residents of the land, R.I.P.

~~

Wooden Ships - Crosby, Stills & Nash

Go, take your sister then, by the hand,
lead her away from this foreign land,
Far away, where we might laugh again,
We are leaving - you don't need us.

And it's a fair wind, blowin' warm,
Out of the south over my shoulder,
Guess I'll set a course and go...

End of the Line -Traveling Wilburys

Well it's all right... sometimes you gotta be strong.
Well it's all right, even when push comes to shove.
Well it's all right, everything will work out fine.
We're going to the end of the line.

This Night Has Opened My Eyes - The Smiths

I'm not happy and I'm not sad...
She took away your troubles but then again she left pain.
Could of been a poet or could have been a fool..

Hey Jude - The Beatles

Take a sad song and make it better...

Ground Control to Major Tom (Space Oddity) - David Bowie

Ground Control to Major Tom
Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you "Here am I floating 'round my tin can
Far above the moon
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do"

Two of Us - The Beatles

Two of us Sunday driving
Not arriving
On our way back home
We're on our way home
We're on our way home
We're going home

Bookends - Simon & Garfunkel

Time it was, and what a time it was, it was....
Long ago it must be, I have a photograph..
Preserve your memories, they're all that's left you.

Big Yellow Taxi - Joni Mitchell

They paved paradise and put up a parking lot....
Don't it always seem to go,
That you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone?

The End - The Doors

This is the end, beautiful friend.

The End - The Beatles

And in the end...
