Another week...

Happy Weekend!

Sorry to those newly migrating from/still active on pluspora*, but I'm going to post this on both, to reach all, and add:

Pluspora * contacts/aspectees: I'm going to post more public (photo/music) to diaspora and don't want to bombard people with double/triple posts. (Some have been ancient contacts since the end of G+, a trillion years ago. Sooo: if you see this on pluspora* only, please hunt me out by the same name, profile, shoe size etc., for the time I start mostly posting via diaspora*, this pod.

I figure it will lighten bandwidth on pluspora's (virtual?) server and it's faster-loading for me uploading to diasp.org pod. /end

The Long and Winding Road

Life is full of pathways - neural, life, time, and in and out of swamps and marshes. So many forks in the road.
"Follow the yellow brick road". Hopefully there are trail markers, but often not. Sometimes it's like the scarecrow in _Wizard of O_z.
Don't get surrounded by alligators. (Do it via Zoom!)

PET PEEVE # 102 : "Which way do I go?"

These trail markers offer little hope, no color, no info, like the scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz. Well, there's this way.... or that.

Swamp Music

A little bit of pure swamp.... one of my favorite spots for the Spanish moss and light, especially in golden hour, which reminds me when it is time to "exit, stage right". At the beginning of cocktail hour for gators and other nocturnal feeders.

Here are the kings of Swamp Music, Lynard Skynard. Love the images, similar to my own favorite swamp.
There is quite a lot of good swamp music out there, it seems. Dark and light.

"Uh oh... 🎶 End of the line... Alligators,🐊Gar fish (from Jurassic era) ... and but One Way Out... uh oh...

Look at my fellow hikers, the raccoons, head the other way. (short clip)

One way out - and an unexpected welcome committee!

Here you see my fellow hikers, including the raccoons who shared the path with me... but they are on the safe side of the roadblock.

So I waited... with an hour before the sun sank. Traveling Wilburys' "End of the Line" in my head. But keenly aware: Only One Way Out

Hey everyone, I’m #newhere. [Well, on this pod!]
I’m interested in #communication, #internet, #photography, and #psychology.

OK, Hi, I'm "here", in the motherland of diaspora*, though not a newbie.
Arrived in the Fediverse after 8 years of wonderful life and immersion in Google+.
Now threatened again with extinction in the pod meant to sustain the survivors, about to experience another upheaval. :(

Posted many music/photo collages over the past few years, a few public, most to aspects.
My photos may be found (or will be) with the hashtag #fenfotos . I'm on Flickr & Twitter too, thankfully undisturbed for decades.

Lots of good things said about "here". I'm far from home now but will try to populate some of my favorite posts onto this pod when/if I can, and post primarily to this spot as time wears on. Hoping those who are already connected will re-aspect me & I'll do same.

Thanks for the welcomes and anticipated suggestions (sharing by tags, aspects, etc.)
Really hoping to have a reliable home... because...There's no place like home
Thanks for the encouragement to move to this neighborhood, hope my music isn't too loud. :))

"A is for Alligator".... still!

This is where "Humpback" hangs, star of a viral video about the dinosaur-sized gators crossing this thin path between two swamps.

This is the only trail out, an hour before sunset, and what do I see up ahead? A welcome committee I was not expecting. At the moment all I could do is keep calm, laugh at the raccoons, watch the gator & hope he'll move along after resting from his climb.

At the end of the trail.... maybe... End of the line

Short version: Short/sharp video coming soon. 🐊.

Done. Sorry if you now see multiple public posts twice (if I hit any of your hashtags). Better than losing all familiar faces as is now being threatened by pluspora*. ;( Here I be.... far from home now but as @V. T. Eric Layton has been preaching, it's easy enough to at least set it up to have a reliable pod at one's disposal. Mostly going to post (just once) public posts (music/photography mostly) on pora* still to avoid replication, though some I may double post to be sure G+/pora* 2x refugees can see. Happily, I see that the posts I've propagated out with hashtag #fenfotos are see-able "here" but am unsure if they still will be if/when pluspora* goes extinct. Well.... ciao for now.

Willet be ID'd?

My best guess on what these two birds are (in a wild nature preserve on an island in SW Florida on the Gulf Coast).

On the right is the aforementioned Willet, I'm fairly sure. But the one on the left is a bit of a mystery, even after consulting the list of daily sightings nearby, the day before (at the Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge). Not the exact variety on the list, but looking at Florida and Audubon guides & color plates, I'm thinking the big guy is a "semipalmated plover", the only one with this beak length and two-tone colors, and the single ring, plus orange-yellow legs.

Yes, I enjoy the challenge (and thrill) of ID'ing something I've not seen before, or photographed. And being outdoors. This was taken in an odd environment, the Bailey Tract on Sanibel Island, with some old lakes and marshes (with gators etc.) but also some shrub and dried up marsh. I had a long lens with me and truly my tired eyes saw mostly sand and tiny movement, and it wasn't until zooming in I knew I had two different birds and not until seeing it large onscreen, scratching my head and wondering what I saw. (catalog fever!).

Any alternative ID's?? (The world will still go on in any case). :)).
Happy Mother's Day (weekend) !

D is for... Deer

And as Julie Andrews famously sang in Rodgers & Hammerstein's "The Sound of Music", in the song "Do-Re-Mi"
Doe—a deer, a female deer,
Usually I will see an adult deer and then as I or the deer get closer, I'll see young fawns. This week I spotted a lone fawn walking across a sunny mustard-colored field of wildflowers and grass. I crept closer, to the edge of the field amid shady trees and watched quietly, taking a few photos. Then I noticed, just a few yards/meters away from me, under the next tree, were two sleeping parents.
After a while they awoke and strolled out into the field and then off into the distance with the young one. Dear oh deer, a lovely day.

C is for..... Cranes. *

* and cheating.

This one is not new, as I try to run the alphabet on my first nature outings since pandemic days...

I'd planned on a cicada (17-yr-cycle insect) I thought I photographed a few days ago, but... they don't belong in this region, so now I'm going to have to re-think what it is, and meanwhile, I offer up a sandhill crane, one of only 2 species of crane found in the U.S. (along with the whooping crane).

Next up will be new things agqin, beginning with D is for Deer.
(uh oh, no elephants!) So E is for "everything else", including some new things for/from me. Some vids too, once I have bandwidth.

And birds, of course, with many more photos of them to come....
After all the gators I'm enjoying butterflies and flowers for a day.

Like my time "in prison" (strict lockdown) amusing myself with A to Z activities to pass the time. Wonder how this will go. I just identified the "prehistoric fish" and some turtles, coming up (slowly but surely).

Did you miss me? Happy to see me?
Yes. I missed nature, life, many things for more than a year.

I have had a very busy few days trying to make up, but also have little Internet most time now. Now I am sorting many, many photos as I squeeze images from camera card into computer. Much to come over a few weeks, but only smaller images now.
Running through the jungle, and alphabet too: A is for Alligator.

Coming attractions (sketching in my head): B is birds & butterflies, C is... a cicada! D a deer, E is everything else: flowers, rabbits, squirrels, turtles, & some raccoons who followed me until we were trapped on a trail by a gator... and a prehistoric fish too. Soon.

Happy springing into spring! 😎

Spring is beginning to spring: A New York update/report

Warm day today, people in short sleeves, pets & owners out for leisurely walks or a visit to one of many outdoor cafes/restaurants.

Daffodils are everywhere - in window planters and street gardens. mostly. In the parks, pink cherry blossoms aren't "woke" yet, but a few white blossoms are happening, including in Verdi Square. Samples.

I wonder what the pink flower is (in a garden, in soil, not a tree, like a magnolia, and no center like a daffodil... hmm)

And in the news: As I'd predicted/hoped, June will see a lot of re-opening, especially outdoors. Comedy clubs are re-opening in May/June, Shakespeare in the Park resumes in July, Broadway looking to open at reduced capacity early fall. #StaySafe Come visit!

A Farewell to Hemingway....

I feel immersed in Hemingway after 3 evenings of documentary (Ken Burns, "Hemingway", on PBS television). I know the program cannot (easily) be seen outside the U.S., but I just found a little article which should be accessible, just a little taste of Finca Vigia, with just a little taste of history and biography:

At Home in Cuba with Ernest Hemingway

I was curious about the artwork he collected, and when I saw this article with photos ("Hey! I know that place!") I was happy to learn some of it. The big painting in his dining room is La ferme (The Farm) by Joan Miró . Perfect for here, no?

Link above leads to the article (which may or may not pop up on pora* I've learned!) And here is another sample of Hemingway's art collection, a plate by Picasso in his office.

Part 2/3 - Hemingway

Tonight Ken Burns' documentary (3 parts, 6 hours total) followed Hemingway's progression from Paris and wife # 2, to Spain's war, into WWII, and a move towards life in Finca Vigia (Cuban suburb of Havana). And his new anchor and wife, and For Whom the Bell Tolls.

This photo is from there. In the background you can see some of his military boots, in a closet.

Usual suspects - and a mystery bird

Most of these birds are common in the swamps & marshes of SW Florid - and familiar to me. Such as those here: two greater yellowlegs (4 to be literal), an ibis, and a group of Black-necked stilts (the ones who seem to wade on toothpick stilts).

But the one closest to center here, small, black-purple-blue (or maybe 2-tone/glossy)... sharp beak, solo, not on a tree... Unusual,

I've yet to hit the field guides, though I don't remember ever seeing this. Who knows? Maybe they're common! Some type of Florida jay? Not a scrub or pinyon jay, though they look similar (say the guidebooks), and they stay inland in dry scrub, not here. Mystified.

Anyone know this bird offhand? The tail almost looks jay or mockingbird, but... It's got me! Probably common! (somewhere). But I've never seen it, or at least never photographed it. I don't think it's a common crow or blackbird I see mostly on land and trees. But... ?

Anhinga on Branch in the Sun

These are rather unique, anhingas. You can see its webbed feet here, and it really is a water bird ("the better to swim, my dears"), but unlike ducks and other water birds it lacks oil on its feathers. So it's a yin-yang thing. They're great divers, and then swim like ducks back to some sunny spot where they can dry off.

White Pelicans and Black Skimmers

("Black and White in Color")

Here are some black skimmers, skimming the water ("It's what we do") nearby a group of white pelicans.

The skimmers are Interesting and unique birds. They have a reverse "overbite" with a long lower mandible and a shorter upper beak which snaps shut like a mousetrap when some food (fish) are scooped up while skimming.

White pelicans are interesting too, very different in habits from the brown ones in their fishing behavior. The brown ones 'dive bomb' with a big splash. while the white ones feed from the water surface, often coordinating in a group to force fish into shallow water for easy picking.

Anhinga - AKA "snake bird"

The anhinga is an interesting bird, both in and out of water. It has little natural buoyancy and no oil on its feathers, so it is often seen after fishing in the water, with wings stretched out to dry in the sun before flying again. Its strategy is to divebomb into the water to spear fish, and it can swim deep and fast underwater.

I just missed this one coming up with a big fish (boo hoo, putting camera away then) but it caught my attention before floating off like a periscope or Loch Ness monster, as it was only a few feet/meters from me. This here is why the anhinga is also commonly called the "snake bird", seen with only its long thin neck above the water.
