From @Craig Maloney

What's a mechanic that you don't care for but understand why it's in a game that you could otherwise love.

His answer: Negative scoring for me. It's pretty much killed my love for games like Blokus because it's feels like a lazy design choice.

Mine is a more pervasive one in the hobby- polyhedral dice. I understand the need for different probability distributions, but I just prefer 6-sided dice (including dF). I play, and have played other games, but this polyhedral dice are the reason that I end up converting so many things to Fate Core or PbtA (in the past, I converted everything to GURPS).

What do you wish your friendly Local Game Store was doing differently?

I'd be glad if I had a friendly local game store. There's one that I visit when I go to town, but now that I'm living in a more rural setting, game stores are few and far between. I worked in a game store for 10+ years though, and it was very hard to compete with online retailers in price- I tried to get the owner more interested in competing in the areas that we could- events, demos, and just customer service. But in the end, even that wasn't enough to keep the store alive.

Have you published and/or been involved in the design of anything Tabletop Game related? If so, would you consider it a success? What catches your attention when considering an Indie Tabletop game related item?

I have had a hand in a few products, but nothing that was my own. I want to do it myself, but seeing so many projects fail in execution, I'm taking a slower approach with my own.

As far as considering an indie tabletop game, it has to be written at the least- I'm done backing items that have not been written. There also has to be something that is a fresh and unique approach to design that I want to read and dissect (as I don't get as much of an opportunity to play these days), or just something that I want to help come to fruition.

Are there any game mechanics that you objectively think are not so good but really enjoy anyway?

I know that personally, fumbles happen way too often in most games for someone trained in the skill. We don't see people that train for most of their lives fail in skills as often as RPGs would make it seem. It does, however, add tension and risk to every roll made.

How much use of the works of others is 'fair'?

To a large extent, we have more content to borrow from for our own ideas than ever. There is a proliferation of creative commons content out there for use, and many works entering into the public domain. But everyone wants to see something 'new', not yet another PbtA or Fate Core derivative. But there are some that have a talent for taking ideas and putting a spin on them to make them feel new.

I love the "Acts of Caine" novel by Matthew Stover, and in one of my designs, I borrowed the idea that actors jumping between dimensions to entertain the upper classes. This isn't new to this series- there have been several instances of people having alternate world experiences, from Xanth to the Matrix. However, since I named this as my source, there were a few negative comments to using something else for an idea and it not being fresh and new, even though the actual implementation of the premise was quite different.

How much do you try to steer away from any pre-existing influences in your design? How much do you pre-judge a design based on there being obvious influences in it?

(And if you have any ideas for questions, feel free to shoot them my way, and anyone that you'd like to get added to the list).
